How to fit Johnson/Evinrude fuel pump properly

So to cut a long story short. My jouster 21 came with an 8hp Johnson Evinrude longshaft Seahorse outboard.
Seems in pretty good shape but wouldnt start (been standing a while)
So in my haste me and my dad removed the fuel pump and checked the carbs unfortunately upon checking the information at "leeroysramblings" aftetwards which suggested marking the pump before removal which we didnt we purchased a new pump and now having trouble Installing without fuel p***ng out

Any suggestions

LeeRoy should be your friend on this

You dont say what year the engine is. or give the model number or say which type of pump. The little square one or the later type.

However this is how the little square type is fitted to an '84 6 Hp. The 8 hp will be the same

Thanks VicS the pump is the older style as in your pictures but the issue seems to lie in putting it together as the internal parts need to be in the correct position depending upon how it was originally fitted. Hence its p****ing out fuel from the side of the pump itsself

I must confess I have never taken it off the engine let alone taken it apart.

I'd have assumed that if I bought a complete replacement pump it would be fully assembled with two of the screws ( top and bottom ones in the picture) holding it all together leaving only the other two, and the base gasket behind it, to bolt it in position.

I dont quite see how it can leak fuel from the sides of the pump when there is gasket between each section.

Maybe the pump you bought is defective or has been tampered with. Be suspicious if the packaging had already been opened.

Two choices: Check its assembled correctly and if not use LeeRoys instructions to sort it out or return it for refund or replacement.

You dont say where you bought the replacement pump but I buy what few parts i have needed from Oakley marine who get them directly from the warehouse in Belgium

Have finally sorted the outboard thanks to my brother who came round and got it started in 10 minutes ?
