Evening all.

We have a motor boat that came with a radio. (from France).
Its a seacom m- 168f. I have a manual but thats all in French
personally im not a fan of it after doing the vhf course.

im not even sure if it has MMSI ability.

is there a way to find out if the ship has been issued one?

Go here http://www.itu.int/online/mms/mars/ship_search.sh and put in its name and do a search

You will have to change it if you are keeping the boat in the UK as MMSI numbers are country specific. On many radios this is a dealer job. If it is a DSC radio and has a number then you should be able to find it in the menu.

As you know the make and model, suggest you speak to a dealer who services that make.

Is this a new boat or a secondhand one you have bought in France?

You can get your licence for the set on line and you will be allocated an MMSI. If the radio is new and unused then you just enter the number in the radio. If it already has a French MMSI then you will have to change which with mosts sets is a dealer job.

There is no requirement to register your boat in the UK unless you intend taking it abroad. You do not register at a port, but with the registry in Cardiff. There are two registers. The first is known as the SSR and simply identifies the boat as a British Ship. This can be done on line for £25. The full register called Part 1 is a register of title will is more complicated and expensive. Most people use the SSR. You will need to check that you are eligible to have a boat on the register. The eligibility criteria are on the registry website.

As you are new there is an awful lot to learn so suggest you buy a book or two on buying and owning a boat such as those published by the RYA. You should also consider taking some training courses, also with the RYA

thanks again,.

courses we have taken are vhf, radar, powerboat level 2, which is where I have discovered the above

the radio came with the boat. It looks to be quite an old unit. pretty sure it Doesn't have DSC and i'm almost certian I will be putting it in the bin for an icom or something else alike

Some dedicated person has retyped the French manual into a web page. It's a basic pre-DSC radio and won't have an MMSI.

In which case on the website when applying for the ships radio license ( Which is free) you will find an option to generate a new MMSI number. (IIRC you leave the MMSI blank on the form but worth checking!!)

new number generated straight away and can be put into the new set when bought but be really careful, you get 1 shot and if you put in the wrong number it's back to the dealer!

Entering the mmsi is not so squeaky bum as made out. You usually are asked to enter it and then get a chance to 'review' before being asked to 'confirm'.
