Yes, I have been living a year and a half in the US, and I know Americans can be very friendly, but they also like to sue.
Maybe I should have all my friends sign a document before entering the boat where I protect myself from such.
Svein. That would be 'contracting out of law' and worth nothing. It would even work against you, as it would show you were trying to get round the rules.
You would have to find a niche market. Not easy, and paying guests expect to board in a port/marina (which costs..) not from a dinghy in a choppy bay.
I used to live in a southern european country and frequently had people spending a couple of weeks enjoying the life. Often their idea was to sell up and open a bar. My first question was ' Have your run one before?' ' No' was the answer. So my reply was ' Then do not try it here'. First you have to learn the language, then find a good place and set it up. Frequently along side established competition. The only people I knew that made it work, had already had done it before. Your idea is nice, but much the same. Running a big motor boat ( or sail) is very expensive, especially if kept to the standards expected for chartering. I have done both, a bar in Portugal and a 70ft ketch. On the boat, the chartering offset the costs (a bit). But were not an earner. Also, would not be OK now, with the increased regs and national competition in the areas you would like to operate in.
I would buy a modest yacht and live within my means, how ever low. Some of the above ideas might be helpful, as in buying property to let. A far safer idea than investing in a motor yacht.
