How to cut a slice off a brass block

Hello Everybody,
I have an oblong brass block 56 by 56 by 120 mm.I need to cut a "slice" 12mm off one side to reduce it to 44 by 56 by 120mm.
It's for my tiller attachment winter project. Would this be something best done on a milling machine? Not quite
sure if I trust myself to do it with a hacksaw.Anybody know anywhere I can get this done in the NW
England area?Thanks in advance

Have a look on u tube for a

Or by hand use one of these set al 90 degrees.

This with a metal blade will help to control the accuracy of the cut.

For an accurate cut then either a Mill or four jaw chuck in a Lathe.
If you turn it in a lathe and accept the waste, do watch the swarf. Cover your eyes and try to contrive a guard. It goes everywhere. When the wife complains about the grit in the bed, you will be convinced.

If you don't have a four jaw, you can get away with a three jaw. It doesn't have to run true.

I'd be interested to know more about exactly what you're planning to do. I helped make a new tiller headstock last year, in a bid to save £200+ (and in the seeming absence of any available metalworker who would take on the job).

We eventually used a couple of 6mm stainless plates for the sides, bolted to the wood tiller so that the square-section top of the rudder stock is tightly gripped between nylon washers; and 3mm 90-degree steel plates to box the whole thing in securely. It's heavy, but very solid.

Having started with a long, two-inch-square bar, are you planning to hollow it out to make room for the top of the rudder stock, and for the tiller itself? If so, the job of removing all that metal sounds like a much bigger task to accomplish accurately at home, than merely cutting some excess off the outside dimensions.
