I have twin ford d2715`s the inlet air filters appear to be permanent gauze and do not seem to be replaceable items. I want to clean them. Any body got any advice on solution to use and should I oil the gauze before refit and if so what type of oil.
Thanks all.

Air filters, on a boat?

Old Harry is correct except I would have used compressed air first then washed if required. It is all a matter of taste and / or what is available to you. As long as the filters end up not obstructing the flow of air.

Is your filter on your boat?

air filter

Not sure what you mean about wether the filters are on the boat. I have removed them for cleaning as its a 1980 boat and new to me. Having a bit of white smoke problem and have sorted injectors and nwant to cleanse air filters at same time as I believe this can also be a cause of smoke and they need doing anyway. Someone suggested using gunk instead of petrol. Is this inadvisable only I have lots of it.
Thanks again

Gunk if you like but then wash with water and thoroughly dry before coating in oil

If correctly oiled previously washing out with paraffin shaking out and then re-oiling will do the trick. It's what I did when I had that type in a car.

I would not use petrol. It's insane to use something harmful (to you) and so highly flammable when it's not necessary.

We clean ours with gunk/jizer, rinse clean and allow to dry, no need to oil them there's enough of that in the atmosphere, if yours are anything like ours they will be looking like black oily hedgehogs at the moment.
