Hi all as the title says, I'm looking for any tips or help on how can clean the Flame Arrestor/intake its the metal finned type.

Just took a look at it today and seemed quite thick with dirt, Has anyone on here tried to replace theres with the K&N marine ones?

Re: how to clean mercruiser air filter?

Take it off and dunk the whole thing in a dish of paraffin. May need a bit of a scrub with an old paintbrush if it's really clogged up, then a quick shake and leave it out in the breeze to dry.

Petrol is just as effective as a cleaner, but also tends to remove eyebrows, skin and other bits if it catches fire, so definitely not recommended /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I suppose any sort of solvent would do the job as you just need to dissolve the oil which sticks all the dust and stuff to the metalwork.

The key from a safety point of view is to use something that's not too volatile so it doesn't form clouds of vapour that drift off looking for the nearest source of ignition. Not sure how volatile surgical spirit is or how violent the resulting explosion would be if it ignited. Let us know if you find out /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
