Hi, how best to clean the exhaust elbow and more importantly the exhaust port? I’ve read acid for elbow but this will attack the metal. So I’m thinking of using caustic soda solution? For the exhaust port I’m not sure what do do. My biggest concern is something going back inside. Any ideas? Please see pics. People on the Moody Association with Volvo 2003 engines advise a soak in dilute brick cleaner. However depending on how old the elbow is or how gummed up there is a danger that the thin internal dividing plate in the elbow may not survive. People have reported that it is very easy to poke a screwdriver through the wall trying to remove the burnt on deposits. It is a risky operation.

I replaced mine last year . I got a Volvo one from Keyparts which was £176 including delivery. I did consider a stainless one from other sources but that was nearer £250. I reckoned that as the previous one had lasted 20 years then the new Volvo one would see me out.

Great. Any advice on the exhaust port? This is the one that gives me more concern how to clean. Cheers

I guess my biggest concern is something going back down in to the cylinder. I’m not an engine expert. Is this likely if I start going at it with a screw driver as I obviously can or soak the part in cleaner.

Is that part of the exhaust manifold? If so, I'd take it off and give it the same brick cleaner treatment. If removing it isn't an option, I'd grind the crud out with a Dremel or similar. using a vacuum cleaner to make sure the bits go out rather than in.

Top tip Using the house vacuum cleaner may not be good for marital harmony...

I don't think an alkali (caustic soda) will touch those deposits

Sounds like a plan! Note taken of the tip!

I’ve had it in a the caustic soda for a few hours and it’s definitely cleaning the deposits! I’m hoping by morning it will be clean as a whistle. It wasn’t my idea to use caustic soda it was a recommendation. Seems like a good one so far.
