Hi spurred on by various posts /tales of woe on these columns,I've bit the bullet , extracted remaining fuel in tank dragged it out from behind the engine, am I glad its only a 25ltr tank! Now had my suspicions that there was debris at the bottom from what I could see down the deck filler but gladly have never suffered fuel starvation problems & only started this exercise for piece of mind & now so glad I did, there was what can only called crud deposited all the way up the sides of tank& a fair amount loosely moving about in the last remains of fuel. On extracting pick up pipe I got a indication to the extent of crud it appears to go worse towards the top, so working on the principle that rumbling stone in a cement mixer leaves it spotless proceeded to tip a bucket of small stone & gravel down the filler neck half a bucket of water & a cup of wash up liquid for god luck , blank off connection holes & over the next few days had a few sessions of strictly come dancing with a fuel tank in the drive! A bit of the old twist & shake (you don't lose it ya know) . So job done good rinse out & now looks like new inside and good for another 20 odd years but before it go's back will have a drain pipe welded on & tap fitted.
Its only my 2nd year with this boat & i can only think this deposit has only built up through failure to top up tank over winter for a number of years.

Well at least it isnt in your domestic central heating tank!
Mine is a beautiful mix of white and black diesel bug.
Luckily I have a spare tank.

I have never used any fuel additive or treatment, but I always top up my tanks for the winter. My tanks have relatively small bases, and also have small sumps with drain valves. I am meticulous in making sure that there is no water in the tanks.
I have never had a problem.
