How to become a marine electronics engineer

What advice would you have for someone who would like to become a qualified/certified engineer in marine electonics? The person concerned has a background in electronics (HND) but works full time in another industry now so any training would have to be done at evenings/weekends or distance learning.
How much would a marine electronics engineer expect to earn and what is the job market like?

Most marine electronics engineers start by working for an established business to gain experience and reputation. It is then up to the individual as to when he decides on the possibility of working for himself. A firm like Greenham Regis is always busy and may be a good starting point.

I'd start by apprenticing myself to someone, perhaps in the general area of Gosport, who understands how to virulently overcharge. Once you've overcome any natural reticence towards hoovering your fellow man you'll be most of the way there. Do I sound a tad cynical?

I don't know of any specific courses aimed at marine engineers, but with an HND you will certainly have the basic knowledge. I would enquire with or with one of the quality international marine electronics companies such as <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.bandg.com/careers.htm>Brookes & Gatehouse .

Sorry to say no vacancies here- we design and build nav equipment but rarely do any installations.
