Is this a proper ensign staff, with cap and cleat?

Like this?

Get a piece of thin line that's about twice the length of the staff, or a bit less. Thread through the sheeve in the cap - up from below, and back down, so that both ends come out of the bottom of the cap. In one end of your halyard, tie a small loop - use a bowline. Thread the toggle on the ensign through this loop - you want a small loop so it can't shake itself out. The other way to attach the halyard is with a clove hitch around the toggle.

Tie the other end of the halyard to the loop at the bottom of the line sewn to the flag - use a sheet bend. Cleat both ends of the halyard to the cleat on the staff, making sure that the ensign is stretched tight, and hard up against the sheeve in the cap. Use a round turn on the cleat, and then a figure of eight. Finish with a locking half hitch.

Thanks! Think I'll print this out and cross reference with book of knots to make sure I do it right!

It is a proper ensign staff, but its stainless so not quite the same think it has a hook at the top and a loop at the bottom... or maybe the other way round!

Must be a builder or a sparky to come out with that.

Nails would rust in days and split the pole.

Two Stainless counter sunk bolts drilled through 2 inch apart at an angle of 45' could be used if the cleat is absent.

I thought he wanted to do a proper job /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I am sure he could have worked out the easiest way was just to knot it to the sports boat obligatory Jolly Rodger (cable tied to the VHF mast no doubt) /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Yes, I wanted to do a proper job, so I used cable ties. Ensign doesn't fall off and I saved at least three hours drinking time trying to work out from a book which bit goes over what.

I chalked that one up as a result.

I think you would find if you cruised a lot of miles the flag would waft around the cable tie and would fray prematurely.

Thats why I used insulating tape to tie mine on. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
