How to adjust Idling speed, VP 2003?

Can anyone advise how to alter the idling speed of a VP 2003? According to the rev counter, mine idles at about 700 rpm but according to the workshop manual it should be 775-825; the operator's handbook says 850. (The workshop manual doesn't tell how to adjust as far as I can see - it describes dismantling and reassemby.)

I would be happy with its current performance only the TWC charge controller causes an annoying beep due to the low revs. This quite destroys the atmosphere when anchoring! The beep disappears at around 850rpm.

Incidentally, I have noticed that when first atarted, the engine ticks over at only about 500 rpm, then after 2 or 3 minutes it suddenly speeds up to about 700. Is this normal? It seems not to cause any trouble.

Thanks in adavance for any advice you can offer.

Derek, ours does this too, I tend to wait until it happens then move off the pontoon.

Normally on a diesel engine there is a screw stop for slow speed and a screw stop for maximum speed on the speed quadrant where the speed lever is. These usually define the tickover and max speed and not the Teleflex

Bilgediver is quite correct, look on the quadrant for an adjuster screw for your idle speed. The slow running on start up is probably an excess fuel component which allows slightly more fuel on starting to raise compression within the cylinders and ease starting, it will normally (as yours does) speed up as the excess fuel delivery eases back with a little more engine temperature. Remember not to make any adjustments to tickover speed on a cold engine as you may find that when it reaches operating temperature your idling speed is about 1000rpm ! Not good for your engine or gearbox ..
Good luck in your endeavours...

I have recently done this on my 2003. It is very easy - as you face the front of the engine, on the right hand side at the bottom you will see where the stop cable and throttle cable connect. On mine they are painted yellow from the factory. The throttle has a locking screw and adjustment thread, with a tension spring. Just slacken the locking screw and adjust in small steps until you reach the desired speed. Then tighten the locking screw. You may be able to adjust at the throttle control end, but adjusting on the engine should be easier.

You have adjusted the cable?

Doesn't the lever to which the cable is attached come up against an adjustable screw which is the idle speed adjustment #39 in this diagram

Thanks to all for the assistance. I haven't done the adjustment but I can understand what's to be done.

I didn't understand Grumpy's account of the change in idle speed on warming up but I'm reassured that others have similar behaviour and it doesn't seem to cause any trouble.

Regards,
Derek

My idle speed seems independent of the control lever position. It does seem to settle if I rev the engine, then drop to idle. I am thinking that the speed control mechanism could be sticky from lack of use. VP2001 engine. Is such a thing possible?

Possibly an anomaly with the governor when the engine oil thins out.
