How self sufficient can you be?

A far more compelling argument than any disputable comments about global warming.

Indeed!

I've no wish to kick off another global warming debate. (For what it's worth my view is that it's likely enough to make it prudent to take the threat on board. Say the doomsayers' outcome is only 25% probable. Which of us would burden our kids with even a 1:3 chance of a catastrophe. You certainly wouldn't board a plane with those sort of odds.)

But what I absolutely don't undertand is why the 'oil running out' scenario, so widespread 30 years ago, has somehow disappeared. Surely everyone can get their heads around the idea of a finite resource running out. Far too many of the global warming zealots, it seems, insist that we take on board not just their proposals for action, but their quasi-religious reasons for adopting them...their faith. And I seem not to be alone in digging in my heels when confronted with that sort of doctrinaire conformism.

It so depends on what you want out of life, where your comfort zone is...

The longest time we have spent totally off the grid was just over 5 months(in Portugal). A wind generator(Kiss), paraffin lights, mechanical refrigerator. water catching or collecting from a well.

We carry sufficient propane for 9 months cruising, that's cooking every day, baking bread etc. Enough fuel to run the engine daily to cool the refrigerator and charge the batteries( if the wind isn't blowing) for 250 days. If the wind don't blow we don't sail, or motor!

Sufficient food for 7 months, gets a little boring without fresh produce though. We are quite good at fishing which helps.

Longest time at sea 32 days, no problems, didn't even use half our water tankage, 600 litres! Bit smelly though!

We have an ssb radio that supports email through a sailmail account. That keeps us in touch with family and able to access weather info.

625 amp hour battery bank, PUR40 water maker that runs off the wind generator(when the wind is blowing), manual sewing machine for sail repairs, and so on.

lots of stowage for books is vital. A couple of friends spent 8 months in Greenland, totally self sufficient, needed 1000 books to get them through though!!!

Currently at anchor, just filled diesel tank for first time in 5 months, only needed 150 litres to top up. Go shopping for fresh produce every 2-3 weeks, sometimes longer. Grow herbs and salad stuff on deck......
