How self sufficient are you?

With my previous engine - a sadly abused Volvo MD2b, I have several times sailed home engineless. Once onto my mooring deep in Conway harbour, timing was critical as tides there are viscious. Once from IoM into Port Dinorwig Dock to tie up alongside a coaster with a derrick so that I could remove my engine & drop it straight into the back of my car to take home for repair.

Having a ketch & roller reefing allows me to manage my speed by selecting appropriate sails as required. I have also used the tender tied alongside with a 2hp engine to manouver in calm water.

A technique I haven't yet used, but would like to try is drudging. Where I sail is mostly shallow, sandy or mud bottom & strong tides so, theoretically, you can drift down tide with the fouled anchor dragging along the bottom to slow you enough to gain steerage way.
