I think I've seen that boat before, in a 1930's edition of the Yachting Monthly, in an article by WM Blake, and I think she may be called "Peggy" or something similar. I fancy she spent some time in the Isle of Man, and was built around the 1780's.
Ah. You are nearly right. Spot on with the date. She's called Margaret (which is shortened to Peggy of course) and was built for the Curwen family on Belle Isle on Windermere, so it was an island.
Claimed to be the oldest yacht in the UK.

Details from the Windermere Steamboat Museum website where we went today to have a look around at the conservation work being started after a bit of a hiccup.

So can I now get in there?

I have been waiting for a long time to get in there to see a specific boat and I have made requests for access several times when passing over the last couple of years, living down south but having relies in Scotland I sometimes go past.

Nah. It was a Heritage open day.
Although they are starting to plan some more open access days.
Which boat are you interested in?
It may be that you may have more luck with some advance warning now.
Edward King who was in charge of the Lakeland Arts Trust has ......erm........gone and a new man is in charge. In fact a boatbuilder called Adrian Stone is now in charge of the restorations and he may be the man to contact.

Re the Peggy/Margaret connection. The Peggy is preserved at Castletown in the IOM, same vintage and reputedly sailed over to the Lake district for a challenge race when fairly new. My own memory of the information in the museum is a bit sketchy, last there 20 years ago, so I can't confirm that Margaret was the boat sailed against but it would seem likely. Incidentally Peggy mounts a couple of small swivel guns, ideal for registering a protest methinks. I also seem to recall that she has sliding keels ( early centreboards ) and was considered advanced for her day.

changeable pitch through a sliding lever ? Square runnel on boss.

Shaft rotates in one direction only, so no gearbox.

How strange. I saw that boat but did not take any pictures. These are cropped from pictures taken on April 2007, the day the museum closed.
