How often do you change your gearbox oil?

Which is? What engine?

Whatever it says in the manual for the box in question, in your case 300hrs or 1 year. I though we were talking about gearboxes, not engines, the same box can be and is fitted to may different engines. A bit of Dextron or oil costs so little after all.

The auto box in my car transmits 300 bhp and is sealed for life. There is no drain plug and no dipstick. It's supposed to be good for 100,000 miles or 20 years. Surely an annual change on a boat is a bit OTT?

Who knows.

A car with 300bhp probably has a life expectancy of only a few months.

I suspect that a marine gearbox when going into gear (or into reverse with the prop spinning in forward to fold the prop blades or lock the shaft) might throw more metal fragments than in an automatic vehicle gearbox - or even a manual with that new fangled synchromesh. It may be the metal fragments you remove when changing the oil rather than the quality of the oil.

As VicS suggests, I'll probably have killed myself before then!

The gearbox oil can be changed but it's supposedly a dealer job as it requires the removal of the lower gearbox cover. Presumably the oil just floods out all over the place and the cover gasket then has to be replaced blah blah.......

Anyway, I'll worry about that in another 50k miles!
