How musch should supply and fit of a holding tank cost?

No, it is not compulsory anywhere to fit holding tanks, only restrictions on discharge in some places like Turkey which make holding tanks necessary if you want to use a toilet on board.

Here in Finland holding tanks are compulsory as we don't have the Atlantic Ocean to flush out waste out of sight – and we really do sail in world's most polluted sea area.

The discharge station network is pretty good at least in Gulf of Finland area. But fitting a holding tank to an old boat can be expensive business, just ask how I know.

Composting toilets

Sorry to hijack the thread a little. The cost of fitting a holding tank has caused me to consider alternatives. does anybody have any practical experience of marine composting toilets as they appear(?) to be a cheaper, viable alternative?

My heads is a dangerous enough place on a hot day after being left for a few days unattended without having a portaloo full of potato peelings. :)

Sorry, was probably a bit too sweeping in my statement, but I am Med orientated, and the OP is planning to cruise there. The reality is that, although there is a desire in many places to limit discharge from yachts and there are laws in place (as in Greece) they are unenforceable. The islands do not have sewage treatment plants, relying mostly on septic tanks which are not effective, so raw sewage is often discharged straight into the sea - sometimes in harbours. Easiest way to avoid discharging from yachts in harbour is to use shoreside facilities in tavernas and shops.

Pump out stations are non existent in most of the Med, although some marinas have them. Sant Carles in Spain for example is well provided and it is a condition of having a berth there that you have a holding tank, but that is unusual. Even in the UK despite the density of marina berths there are few pumpouts - only one in Poole where I live and where there are an estimated 8000 boats!

Agree with you about retrofitting tanks having done it in two boats.

Thanks for that bit of info. I have used a gravity fed setup for a couple of years with no real problems so far.

I am not being tight here, but have been reading the "extras" list and some of it is eye wateringly expensive. I am in some ways struggling to see how some things are not standard on a 40 ft boat; shore power, 12v socket, holding tank.
Oh well , what price luxury???

Hi, I will probably never aspire to a new boat but a Southerly was high on our list. They were all too expensive for our buget at the time-3 years ago-or too old.We found an American boat with ALL the bells and whistles fitted for the cost of a ten year old Southerly.Apart from the ability to take the ground we have exactly what we want at a price we were able to pay. Everything except that priceless new boat smell and feeling when its yours at last. What may be an answer to an expensive option is to have the tank installed and have it hooked up to the valves and pumps later,if the yard would agree to just installing a tank.

Surely the first thing to do is, armed with some idea form this thread, to go back to the manufacturer and ask why so much? Esp if it is being fitted before the deck and interior are bonded in..
Oi think there might be some middleman markup going on in there somewheres, Oi do.

I spent about a grand fitting a 130litre tank, including all pipies, pump and valves. Tank in the bilge, so gravity fed. It was all part of doing new water tanks at the same time. Disruption in the boat was massive.

So Sandyman thinks fitting equipment on boats is any way comparable with household stuff - Hah!
The tank is the easy bit!

Exactly. If he had any experience of a retrofit he might not be so enthusiastic about doing it for a living.

I agree.

I completely underestimated how much work was involved in fitting my holding tank (I did it all myself) - not cheap too, even if you DIY.

Satisfying in the end though

I needed a sit down after it all !! :D

holding tank

fitted one to our westerly 36 can recommend JOE at STANSA Bently , Ipswich 01473 312186. he made mine to my spec, with grav outlet, fitted it myself perfectly first time, not a difficult job. Aprox £150 all in. This was more than half the price of tec tanks. No connection with the company just a very satisfied customer.
