How much would you spend on your ensign?

Thought it about time we got one so popped into the chandlers to pick one up. Only wanted a 1/2 yrd one so picked the first one out which was sewn; saw it priced at £28 so promptly put it back and selected a printed one for £9 as it was the cheapest (still way too much imo).
So...sewn and pricey for you or printed and cheaper? Which would you have chosen and why? Are you bothered or not about having an ensign at all?
Just interested in peoples views here.

We tried to economise with a printed one but found that the flapping noise it made in the wind was unbearable...so back to sewn!

don't be sooo mean. You got to buy a properly sewn one, printed looks cr~p and last about 2 weeks. Get your money out!

When its flying in the breeze and looking smart, you will be please you spent the extra!

You're right Ff. So now it's gonna cost me even more on account I've thrown the packaging away and cant return it! You've all bullied me into shame!! So...the correct size is?

None at all at £28, perhaps at half that more justified.

If Haydn can get the burgees at £15 in comparatively tiny volumes, then mass-produced has to be cheaper to make - plus a bit of profit for the retailer, but would agree £28 is pushing it a bit!

I'm sure the burgee will look so much better than the ensign anyway you won't notice the latter is printed...

I see you are a cheapskate - just like me ;-}

Ensigns always fray at the end of the fly, mine used to end up about a foot long. It is very tricky to replace the red bit whilst leaving the sewn canton intact.

I now have two union jack sewn bits (from old ensigns) and I sandwich them onto a new red fly every few years. Royal Yacht Squadron here I come.

I'm well known as a skinflint, but paid £90 for my ensign, plus another £25 for the permit to wear it. It all helps support my club & its 700 year old premises.Anyway, I enjoy flying it.

Agreed - mine's a 1 1/4 yd sewn jobbie - and very nice it looks too. ( And so it jolly well should for c£60. )

Never bought one; still on the one that came with the boat. Plus one that my late great-aunt made (along with various hand-sewn courtesy flags) that I took on the Cherbourg trip to fly at the mizzen masthead when the mizzen sail was stowed (the normal ensign comes down with the sail; I don't bother hoisting a substitute in UK waters but thought I ought to for Forrin).

Not sure if I can do it, my embroidery man can only embroider a certain area. But I'll bet that my flag man and the stichy bloke, who makes the flags, could come up with a cracking flag. I see a sort of red ensign,with a little mouse in the corner. Embroideried, no idea why we can not have our blue ensign, every one else seems to have one. So a blue flag, with with a red ensign, then the little mouse.

I'll get my bloke on to it in the morning. So then you will get a proper blue flag defaced.
