How much would you expect to pay for a sprayhood?

Thanks everyone for the input. Boat's currently ashore Mylor, with a mooring at Helford from early June. Tempted to go the ebay route, but I suspect any sailmaker who is including a couple of visits to the boat is going to turn out around the same price (judging from what you've said here) - and I'd rather be confident that it will fit properly.

I got the boat for a "good" price, including an allowance for the sprayhood and some chipped gel-coat, and prepared to do whatever DIY seems within my skillset (and available tools!). Plumbing, wiring and headlining I can cope with, but not sewing a new sprayhood.
Our boat is also at Mylor and SBK in Falmouth are doing our sprayhood. Having seen the quality of their work and commitment to getting the right fit, £1500 didn’t seem too bad.

Looked up this thread as I'm having a 3 bar sprayhood recovered and wondered if the price was reasonable.

Boat is a Jeanneau 43DS bought new in 2005.

Had the original sprayhood recovered in June 2014 by TecSew for £781.50 and at same time had bimini hood modified and sides made to make a cockpit tent enclosure - so a fairly big order.

UV and wind have now knackered the TecSew replacement. Realistically it should of been replaced last year.

However original Jeanneau sprayhood lasted 9yrs and TecSew recovered one 10yrs but that one has been exposed to a lot more sun in Portugal for last 6yrs. So good recommendation for TecSew quality.

New Sprayhood being made by a one man band here in Portugal and after reading this thread believe I am getting good value.

I was pointed to a "parts" supplier in Spain and ordered the more expensive materials. Cover material, windows, reinforcement, binding tape, clips and zips came to €955.21. Labour is currently €1000. My impression is that quality of work is excellent with reinforcing patches sewn in at all corners and design modified to fit tighter to cockpit sides.

Hence I'm happy while initially thought it expensive as now 3x cost some 10yrs later - that's inflation for you!!

Now doing zip repair to bimini but maintenance is endless and thats boat ownership for you!

Sadly boat use here is severely curtailed as wife is now a full time carer for her mother who has dementia. She is 90yrs old this year but it scuppered our plans to do 3 months sailing (or more) around the med.

Regrettably may have to consider selling as its sad to have a boat and not use it! Sadder still as we actually lived on board for 12 months when we had our new house built. Living aboard is allowed in Nazare. Cheapest living we have ever had at €1600pa for a 43 marina berth that included water and electricity. Those of you in UK S Coast marinas- eat your hearts out!!

A postscript to this thread: A big recommendation for SKB sails of Penryn!

After saying they were so busy they couldn't deliver before August, I received a missed call/voicemail from them this morning to say that the cover would be ready today. They had seen that Musketeer was being launched and heading for Helford and hoped they would be intime to fit it while still in Mylor. I replied, and let them know I was on the visitor pontoon for a few days. I Turned up at the boat late morning to see the sprayhood already fitted and looking great! I looked closely and noticed that they'd only provided openings for two lines to the cockpit, when there should have been 4! I phoned them to explain and the lady answering the phone said "yes, we noticed that, we'll sort it out". Within half an hour she turned up with a bag of bits, took the hood off and added two holes with eyelets then re-fitted it! I call that good service!

Apparently, I must have arrived just after they finished fitting it!

I found tecsew's service brilliant when they repaired my cockpit tent recently, all done very quickly and with minimum fuss. They showed me around the factory too which was pretty neat!

+1 SKB completed and fitted ours a week or so ago. They came out to our swing mooring up at Feock and fitted it, but of a run in a rib from Penryn.

I made my current sprayhood soon after I got my boat several years ago. I made a pattern with the transparent plastic material, and made the sprayhood in stages, checking the fit frequently, and final fitting for the deck fittings at the end. I fitted new windows last winter and a snap on window cover to prevent uv degradation. I do have a semi industrial sewing machine - a Singer 20u which does straight and zigzag. I slowed the machine down by fitting smaller drive pulley. Also made a cockpit cover later which is OK but not as well made as the spray spray hood. Bought most of the materials from Pointnorth.

I miss Comfort Afloat at Quay Lane. I got similar service from them when they made the sprayhood for Jissel. There was a small issue with the fit, which I reported, and a day or two later, when I came back to the boat on her mooring, the sprayhood had gone. They'd gone to the mooring to get it back, and refitted it a day or two later.

I had options from a quote a few years back ;) ...

We had our sprayhood made in Pwllheli in 2012. It's done 42,000nm since. We replaced the front windows once. A bit of stitching here and there but it was still holding together until now. 13 years of service. Dark colours last longer. I was told that many years ago. Didnt realy believe it but our navy blue Kayospruce fabric did the job.
We just replaced it with a hardtop. The hardtop is an exact copy of the sprayhood. Same size, same window shape. We built the hardtop in foam core composite. A big job but pleased with the results. It will be substantially cooler than our navy canvas in the tropics.
