How much will my boat cost to run?

Hi,

I am about to buy a SeaRay 215 EC 1997
Mercruiser 5.7l V8 petrol - 189 litre capacity

My petrol will cost £1.10 per litre

So it will cost about £200 for a full engine - but what average crusing speed do you think is likely and how long will that last me?

I realise this is a bit vague, but any help is appreciated.

Have a look here for rpm/speed/performance figures for a 225 with a 260 hp Mercruiser - the figures will be similar for the boat you're looking at. It's an American site, so gallons are US, not Imperial, as above.

In practice, a tankful will probably take you more than 100 miles (depending on conditions) but I like to make allowance for unforseen circumstances.

Hi Floob. I had a searay 200 with a carb-fed V8 so not strictly comparable, if yours is injected it should be a lot more economical. It used to cost us a minimum of £60 a day, often more like £100, and range was very limited. Unless you are going to keep it on a trailer and fill up at tesco you will pay premium prices at the few barges that sell four star.

it all depends on how much you use it and how......

whilst the arithmatic is relatively simple what we, here, can offer is a relistic estimate of these based on

where you live
where it will be moored
why you are buying a boat
what you think you will be doing with it

we feed these apparantly innocent facts into a vast super computer and will return an exact answer, not dissimilar to 42.

Id just add that unless your into serious cruising, a surprising amount of time is spend at anchor, at lunch, swimming,pottering upa river. in fact lots of things that dont actually run the engine much! So it might be 8 gals p hour (up to at least 12 probably if you rush about with the throttle pouring fuel in as fast as it can), but that might not be the most useful way to look at it, as you might not actually cruise for 5 hours in a day. So, cost of a day out on the boat might be more relevant
