I wonder how much weight can a boom hold up on a smaller 22ft boat? Roughly.

Thinking of doing pull ups on it and maybe put a hammock there now that its getting warmer. Would make days at anchor sweet.

So youre saying my bodyweight is okay? Thats nice :)

I mean I kinda figured it should hold that weight. Werent there people lifting engines out over the boom? I dont weigh as much as an engine.

Hmm - depends on how big you are and what engine!

I agree with the 'support the point where you're putting the load with a strap and the main halyard or topping lift.

Hammocks put a lot of lateral strain as well as vertical weight in the components of their load..

How long i your boom is it longer that you are tall.

I would attach the hammock to the mast / boom connection and where you topping lift attaches that way there is very little bending load on the boom as most of the load is taken by the topping lift and the mast rigging and maybe some compression of the boom.

Think about how hard you pull down on the mainsheet, when close-hauled.

It‘ll hold at least that ;)

Pete
That of course is transferring the load to the sail andthe mast. You'd have to rip the sail for the boom to flex too much.
The OP could hoist his main when exercising.
All seems a bit active to me.

Definitely not. Standing rigging is designed to be in tension along its length and the boom is designed to be in compression along its length. As such a hammock attached part way up a stay will put side loads where they shouldn't be, which in turn will put much higher loads on the rig - this is the reason you pull sideways on ropes if you need more oomph! A hammock in the middle of the boom will do similar bad things, while at either end of the boom the boom will be in compression as designed, with the various ropes in tension, as designed.

In that instance the boom's job is also mainly compression and I guess withstanding crushing from the ropes/chains so I wouldn't expect issues. Either way a boom would certainly hold a person, even my little Vivacity 20 boom was happy with my weight anywhere on its length

Do you have a dinghy? Great rowing machines, and when you get to shore you can use the treadmill aka paths :)

Simply invite a larger friend to go sailing with you. It's better to call them 'sailing companion' rather than 'test weight' though.

Thanks for the advice, but rowing machines are cardio and endurance and dont increase your strenght by much. Not even the rowing machines :p

I thought doing the pull ups on theboom or maybe have a metalbar over the companionway (but then Id be limited in the movement and its not very comfy because of the layout of my boat).

I do will keep it in mind. Certainly does sound better haha

I am not as tall as the boom is long.

You can hoik a suspension trainer up on a halyard too
Probably, but what exercises would I be doing with them? I only need to do push ups, plank, pull up (boom), squats and pike handstands for shoulders. Maybe something for abs in specific. What I try to say is that I dont see the advantage of buying some as I can target the whole body without. And if I feel like it I just use a piece of string and duct tape it where I need to grab it. Cheaper and multifunctional.

I enjoy doing it, and I feel better than without. Not just about myself but in general aswell. When I was young I ate a very one sided diet and didnt care for anything I put in me. My diet consistet of pasta, chocolate and toast with cheese. Back then I felt okay and I wasnt fat or anything so to me it was a good diet.

Then I started eating properly, working out, and boy did I feel GOOD. I was full of energy and happy.

And when i stopped eating well and working out again, I felt this huge difference between when I was healthy and when I wasnt. Before I ever tried it, and stuck to it , I didnt know how terrible my body felt all the time, how little energy I had, because itwas the status quo for me. Absolute normal. The baseline. There was only worse but not better.

So I definitely understand when people never tried it and are fine with how they are. But I know I can feel better so I try to achieve that.
