How much weight and space (and trouble) does a holding tank account for?

It also depends where you sail, how many on board etc. 50 litres would only do about a week for a couple (Peggy Hall is the Head Mistress - the US expert). Macerators are required in some jursidictions and in many areas grey water is not allowed to be dumped (let alone black). Blackbeard refers to being able to sight the level - after a while you can't so this adds another expense (and complexity).
I installed mine to sail Sydney Harbour, the Great Barrier Reef and the Kimberley - the "decision" was made when, without one, I was stuck in a marina in a tropical storm, unable/reluctant to leave the boat for three days. Despite their downsides I'd never be without my molded, 70 litre tank with level sensing and macerator (34' boat with space right near the WC). Andrew
