Guess how much to replace our deck tread and treat our boats bottom?

Due to an injury I have picked up, we might have to leave our boat in Scotland for another season. (No hardship - we like sailing up here. The deck tread is looking very sorry for itself in places so I asked the yard (local and reputable) to give me a price for replacing the deck tread when the boat is in their winter storage. I also asked them for a price for peeling the hull and treating the very slight osmosis we have had for years prior to applying epoxy and then epoxy based Copper Coat a/f.

I would like people's guesses at the price I have been quoted for each of the jobs. Excluding VAT. Two prices please - one for replacing the deck tread and one for the peel, wash, dry and epoxy with gelshield and then apply Coppercoat.

The boat is a Westerly Sealord 38'6" long and is a fairly big fat cruising boat with a maximum beam of nearly 4 metres.

By "deck tread" do you mean Treadmaster? Or maybe teak? Both are pigs of jobs to replace and for teak the new material is pricier than unobtainium.
Sorry - yes I mean 'Treadmaster'.

i.e. Chisel the old cork based decking off (Its in large 'patches' shaped round all the fittings.)

So the work is: Clean up the gel coat underneath and cut new shaped patches down and stick them in place with the Tread-Master two pack glue. Labour intensive (there's the clue) but a fairly straightforward job.

Hull £8-10k. Deck £15k (cheaper to skim and deck paint or even Kiwi finish). Personally would not replace with Treadmaster.

As no one else seems to want to guess I'll reveal all

"Remove all Treadmaster, this will include removing and refitting the likes of pullpits and pushpits and some other small fittings. Clean the deck of all bonding adhesive and prepair for new epoxy adhesive and template and fit Treadmaster.
£12908 + vat inc labour and materials"

Under water, peel hull and wash for two days with fresh water then once moisture readings are down move into shed for the filling and fairing as required of the hull. Apply one coats gelsheild 200 and then 4/5 coats coppercoat as specified. This will be done in a temperature controlled area.
£6013+vat inc labour and materials

Winter storage thrown in for free if I take them up on the offer. The hull treatment might be ok but nearly £13k for doing the deck isn't going to happen!

Having had to replace a small section of Treadmaster last winter, getting the old stuff off, clean prep and replace I am not surprised for the nearly 13k, I also did the TBS deck covering on the challenge 67's a number of years ago now and always insisted on not touching the job till the boat had all the old deck coverings removed and made good! Basically the decks needed to be filled, faired and painted so absolutely everything was stripped off the decks, which meant all trim and headlinings from inside. Its a hugely tedious job to do.

What is my prize for getting pretty much spot on? (little over on the hull)

I got a rough estimate of £10k to replace the teak deaking on a 26 footer which for that reason amongst others I didn't buy. Bearing in mind that you will be covering a larger deck with cheaper materials, and that removal of treadmaster is probably easier than removal of teak but that the deck preparation is then fairly similar. I was going to guess around £10k. Isn't this something that She owner's are facing as their Shedeck wears out?

It might be worth getting other quotes. Didn't one of the magazines have an article about someone who saved 50% on labour costs for replacing a teak deck by taking his boat from the Solent to Conwy or thereabouts? That's only a couple of days' from the Clyde ...

Just taking a mid day break from laying a teak deck! Yes, costs can vary according to location and overheads in S coast yards are higher than N Wales. a big variable is the cost of teak as it changes every time you go to buy some. The best teak is very difficult to find and can be substantially more expensive than the now common plantation grown teak. I was lucky with mine because it was essentially remains from a major job and machined from a balk imported over 30 years ago. New teak of the same quality would be 3 times what I paid.

Do not underestimate the job of removing (or laying) Treadmaster. It is a mechanical job and a lot of making good afterwards before relaying. Not surprised the quote is little different from a new teak deck.

What do you mean by 'hold the Coppercoat?' Do you mean you don't like it?

We had Coppercoat on our previous boat, applied professionally before it had ever seen water. It worked really well, but was beginning to flake off a couple of years later. Check what kind of warranty the yard is prepared to offer before committing - it's an expensive job if it's all going to fall off after a couple of years.

Sail the boat to Tunisia and get it done there.

I was speaking some time ago to a Breton who had moved his 45' boat there and the marina was half inhabited by Bretons who found both moorings and maintenance a fraction of the cost that it was at home.

In addition he mentionned cheap flights to get there.

At those sort of prices it may well be worth it.

Is removal of fittings really necessary and all it entails, headlining etc?
Most boats I've seen leave a gap around fittings.

That/s quite a time consuming job and might uncover other problems which will then add to the bill.
