How much to install a 50hp outboard?

I have acquired a brand new Honda BF50D (UK) outboard that needs fitting to my 20ft GRP motorboat (previously had a similar Honda so no new holes needed).
My local Honda dealer has quoted me £500 for labour alone. (£72 per hour).
This seems extortionate. A reliable local outboard bloke quoted £175, but he's not Honda authorised.
Am I being taken for a mug, and does anyone know if I have to use a Honda dealer for installation/servicing to protect the warranty?
Isn't there some law against this?

This is the downside to some bargains did you save £500.
Did you buy from someone who would carry out any PDI work
Suggest that you contact Honda and ask them regards installation and does it need inspection before use.
If you are replacing like with like then a days work does seem excessive anyway.
 
Does it need new remotes kit? Is that included in the independent's quote?
Why not do it yourself?
I am certain that manufacturers cannot insist on approved installers (unless they are offering extended warranty, perhaps)
Ask the question.

Think about those situations, where an engine is removed/refitted or used on more boats (companies, workboats, spare engines, clubs etc.) frequently. The way it is fitted to the transom has no effect on the engine so does not affect warranty.
Ofcourse the way of using the engine (rpm, load etc.) must comply with warranty conditions, but that is a different issue.

Apart from lifting the engine from it's transport cradle to the transom, fitting a 50hp is a not too difficult DIY.
 
To the OP - where are you loacted? Perhaps someone could recommend a good engineer to rig the OB at a better price.
 
Some of you lot must have more money than sense! Get a lift from a mate to put it on the back of the transom, then put a couple of hours work in, job done. Put 50 notes into someones paw if you don't fancy it, rocket science it aint.

Nobody would think that there is a recession. A well known Boat & Outboard dealer had a second hand outboard motor for sale (on brokerage they said) and they wanted £300 to fit it to my speedboat. However I went to Bill Higham who had a slightly dearer outboard but with Free Fitting. And it took an hour to fit.

I just bought a 50 hp from Bill Higham, not the cheapest but you get what you pay for.

The other reason I went to Bill Higham is that he takes outboard motors in PX and I had a 9.9 Evinrude and a 4 hp Mercury, both of which he took in PX,
I am trying to buy a 2006, 22 ft boat with a 2006 Suzuki 90hp Outboard. I dont mind buying an old boat but I dont want to mess about in the Irish Sea with a 6 year old outboard and I would want to put it in PX against a new one, the boat is down south and the outboard dealers down their dont seem to want to take the Suzuki in PX. I dont want to buy the boat unless I can place the outboard so if anyone knows an outboard dealer who does PX please let me know.
