How much more marina space is there?

A few weeks ago we called into a marina on the western side of the Cherbourg Peninsula - they told us they had a six year waiting list! They reckoned the trend was like that all over France.

I am wondering what the attitude of our boat building industry is to this state of affairs. It's not much good ordering a new boat if one cannot find a place to keep it.

Re: Geo/morph

It did. I unwrapped everything, lost the instructions, plugged it into the mains a bit in case that needed charging (it doesn't) then plugged the phone line in a bit untill some lights came on and off a bit, then plonked it in the car and drove about with v good results, probably unrelated to my fiddlings. Now have to work out how to plug radar detector and geo thing into single cig socket.

All this speed trapping, police state and such, is affecting the children: my 12-year old wondered if we could "get stopped by the police for just driving about without having a definite destination".

Suzanne,

Your post has just been brought to my attention by no lesser means than a press release issued by the Thames Boating Trades Association dated 11 July headed 'Misrepresentation of the River Thames marinas'.

In it the TBTA refute your comment that marinas on the Thames charge £2000 more than equivalent South Coast marinas for a 32ft boat. Their quoted list of marina charges (per metre, annual inc VAT) is as follows:

Penton Hook Marina £220
Shepperton Marina £160-£232
Walton Marina £226
Windsor Marina £245
Racecource Yacht Basin £235
Bray Marina £245
Harleyford Marina £180-£305

Given that I know them well and that at least one magazine here has close links with the TBTA, it is unfortunate that they didn't contact us about this in a more positive fashion as I know the Thames is still an area with berthing available. Perhaps representatives should have joined this debate online as the river needs to attract more boats to its rather too quiet reaches.

To get a fair comparison between regions, one needs to allow for the cost of an annual Thames licence and knock-on costs of the Boat Safety scheme. Some charges for engineering services can be the equivalent of their coastal equivalents, sometimes higher. But it is fair to highlight that your quoted £2000 differential for moorings doesn't exist and in fact, the straightforward cost per metre along much of the South Coast is generally more expensive.
