I've been quoted £3150 for a surveyor to carry out a hull and machinery survey on a 63ft boat in Italy by a well known UK yacht survey company. They say it will take 2 days. That doesn't include flights or expenses and it doesn't even include writing the report! If I also ask for a mechanic to carry out a survey on the engines, that would be £6300 in total!
Its a few years since I had a survey done but this seems very high to me. Any comments? Anyone know a good surveyor in Italy who can produce a report in English? Anyone know a good engine technician in Italy familiar with MAN engines who could check the engines?

Ouch, are they real asking that kind of labour for two days work!!! I'm in the wrong side of this job for sure.

I'd shop around if I were you.

I'd like to know who and why they think they can demand that kind of buck just because its abroad.

They would not earn that rate here, most surveyors charge between £15 and £25 per foot, plus expenses occurred if there travelling abroad.

Maybe they have no work here at the moment so there taking a chance that your well heeled enough to say yes.

How about telling us what your thinking of buying , you may get some free help on here what to look for.

The MAN engines for a start would get me twitching .

paul in your opinion could you do a LIST OF BEST TO POOR DIESEL ENGINES FOR BOATS OR IS IT IMPOSIBLE

Ha ha , nice one. All I wil, say is I like green engines.

Seriously your not the first to suggest this , between latestarter and myself I bet we could write a bible but never publish it, we wold just hold all the manufacturers to ransom instead.

You have the option of looking at an alternative UK based surveyor, and £1500 would appear a reasonable rate for the survey, plus X's. You might also ask Mr Volvo Paul to do look at your mechanicals. I'm sure a deal can be done?

If its free I'm happy to pay for it! Its a Ferretti 630 with MAN D2842 V12 1200hp diesels. About 600hrs. FWIW, the boat including the engines is being sold with a 12 month warranty but I still would like to have an engine survey done.

Does Jim do larger (say 60ft+) craft? I've used him a couple of times before for 40ft boats, and he's excellent - I'd be interested to know how far up the size range his expertise goes.

Hi Jimmy - Yes he has done loads btw and has also travelled as far as South America - Now that would be an interesting thread for you guys :encouragement: Not sure what size he does but I know some has been pretty big stuff -I will email him and ask but Mike should contact him anyway imho

When we were considering buying in Italy Bart recommended an Italian surveyor who surveyed his Canados 70. His name was Gino Ciriaci….we didn't pursue that particular boat in the end but as I recall Bart was happy with him. I got a quote of € 1.400,00 plus 4% (Architects and engineers' Order) plus 21% VAT for a Sealine S41, which I thought was a bit steep compared to UK prices, particularly as it didn't include the engines. Not sure how that would work out for a larger boat. I will PM his e-mail address to you in case it is of any interest.

Jim charged me £1500 all in (+lift out cost) for my 37 footer in Italy after I asked for recommendations on here. Money well spent as it turned out.

yes I had GC, very expereinced and thrustworthy, but i'm not sure if he still works,
he charged 2k + travel cost, for a 70ft boat, iirc.

for the engines we had a MAN dealer, only 500euro,
but he didn't do more then checking oil levels,
and measuring temps during sea trial with a heat gun, at cruise speed and at wot.
let me know if you want tel nr's or email adress.

Does 'all in' include travel etc?

I know of him doing several surveys in the Western Med and I can't see what major difference there is between a 40 footer and a 55/60 footer.
Might take a little longer but I'm sure he is well able to provide a good reliable survey at a sensible price.
I've never used him before but from what I've heard, he would be no 1 on my list.

Only as a comparator, Paul Homer charged me just under £1k for the P57 in 2007. RK Marine £280 for the engines.

Great choice of boat, Mike. I went on one in Cannes when they were first launched and was blown away by the build quality, and I love the galley aft layout. I also think the merged side windows works well on this boat, but didn't do anything for the aesthetics of the smaller boats.

I suppose my question was not about his ability to conduct the survey per se (I've got no doubt about that, I'm a very happy customer of Jim's as I've said above) but simply whether or not he has actually done large boats before.
