How much experience do you need Oceanis 343 ?

Re: tortola sunsail

skiing for us in fr.

ok, nelson's dockyard is alright. Colonic is on the noth side, nelson's dockyard at the far s. You're right, no too many flies in antigua, spect they all get used for cooking....

Getting into and out of marinas will be your only problem, or having to put reefs in under way.

For peace of mind and wallet ask Sunsail for a "sink and swim away" insurance policy option, rather than a credit card deposit to cover any potential damage.

It may cost you around £ 120 but at least all you have to worry about then is yourself. Otherwise you will spend the first few days on tender hooks thinking about that £ 1000 plus credit card deposit.

They will do the sink and swim away insurance for the boat, but (in caribeee anyway) not for the dinghy whihis $200 or so. So, when our sunsail boat started filling with water SWMBO packd up iside 2 minutes ready to move to the dinghy, very impressive...

There are narly no marinas where he's going
mostly at anchor or mooring buoys...

If it's a floatilla holiday you will be fine, the lead boat instructors will teach you enough. You don't have to make decisions or navigate if you don't want to, just follow the leader. So all you have to do is hoist the rag and steer, or like so many motor if you prefer.

Re: tortola sunsail

TCM many thanks for this post you've answered all the questions I was thinking of as I was going to charter a boat in the BVI next year.

Excellent post!

Re: tortola sunsail

My son and his mates did exactly the same thing with a 49 footer in Croatia and got awayt with it. Big boats are easier to sail than little ones so the bit you need to focus on is the boat handling ie motoring, mooring etc and the handling of heavyier equipment.

There are several schools who will do a weekend boat handling course and I would recommend going on one. Better to cough up a bit of dosh and relax on hols than be frightened and tense on hols.

You didnt say whether it was a flotilla or charter. If the former, then bone up a bit on your nav. Personally I would recommend the flotilla - I go on these myself and I have my YM ticket. The company is great, the engineer deals with any probs, the hostess knows all the localk boozers, and the skipper will keep an eye on you.
