In New Scientist magazine a few years a go was a letter from someone at the Atomic Energy Research Establishment at Harwell. Apparently the powers that be had designated AERE a no smoking zone and had pinned notices to the inside of all toilet doors stating "This building has been designated a non smoking area". Somone had crossed out the word 'area' and written in the word 'volume'. Now THAT'S pedantic!
