How much electricity do you use when moored?

To be honest we don't use aircon that much. Tend to open all doors, hatches and port holes to get fresh air into boat.

Interestingly, I just went "dead ship" ie everything off inc batteries. Only thing left on was my distribution panel that I control electricity supply from and it was showing I was drawing two amps

It's is starting to get me thinking what is left on!!!

2amp 12v?
 
It is a serious amount but not particularly difficult to get through. If the immersion heater was 2kw and was on permanently, (i know that's not how they work unless faulty, just trying to give an idea), it alone would get through 672kWh in 14 days.

Have you got one of those posh new electronic panels that controls everything on the boat?

Also if your 2A was DC then, on our Princess, there are also High Load and Paserelle isolators that can be on when the DC panel is off.

8A x 12V = 96W say, 100W. So, if my Maths are right, this uses 1 Kwh in 10 hours, or 2.4 Kwh per day, or 72Kwh per month i.e. £25 per month. If you are on a 24V system, the power doubles, so £50 per month.

Have you got inverters on all the time... My inverter uses a few amps just by being on? Not that this would consume as much as you are talking about....

Of course, my Maths could be very wrong :)

Erk that is expensive but with refrigeration and airco on p85 i can just see you getting there on a busy month. FWIW my monthly on a bit smaller boat was €300 or so, though I cannot recall the price per Kwh (btw, you meant kwh not kw. Kw is a rate of consumption whereas kwh is a quantity)

Main use on mine is refrigeration (2 subzeros, 3 other fridges and an icemaker, on all time), airco (when I or crew are on, probably 150 hours/month on average) and lighting (which amounts to most of the batt charger load). I guess you have incandescent lights inside? I'm switching to LED inside on next boat (those new Cantalupis with 85% CRI) to reduce lighting consumption, though as a 5 or 6 grand upgrade (£70 a pop and there are over 100 of the critters, prob 120 on your p85) I doubt I'll ever see a financial payback :D

It just is how it is I guess :-/

I pay Euro 550 per month for a new 3 bedroom villa in Spain c/w with aircon, swimming pool etc etc. This includes all taxes, rates, maintenance etc

Time to ditch the boat Lozzer - there is a villa just down the mountain for rent and I can put a word in for you:D

Mayb1. I only skipper so not my decision to sell. Somehow don't think boss would have a villa that would be that cheap to run either.

JFM. Sexy lighting system you are going for. How is the build coming on? One of my friends is just taking delivery of a 78. I think it is in Ipswich pending handover. Wine do you expect your new boat?

The 85 I skipper has really opened my eyes to displacement boating. This year we have done the best part of 6000nm. The majority at 11 knots. Thank heavens for stabilisers. Can't wait for next season for our next adventure.

I guess in the scheme of running the boat the electric is not a big expense but it is the principle of paying to much for anything.

Has the boss actually queried the electric usage or is it just you that's concerned about how much the bill is?

If the latter, just get on with your job and let the boss pay the bills. If the former, then yes, you need to investigate.

The job of a skipper isn't just driving the boat. I am responsible for a vessel that costs in excess of £3m. With that price tag and size of boat comes a significant budget which includes Insurance, crew, moorings, fuel, servicing etc etc. A quick guestimate by anyone will identify these costs will exceed £000,000's per year.

It would be very remiss of me not to question expenditure. Today I am looking at the renewal of our insurance. I have identified an alternative supplier who will provide same cover for less.

This is where as a skipper I provide added value to the person I work for rather than just taking the money and the introductory backhanders that are available.

I do not subscribe to the just get on and pay because the owner can afford it. Never have and never will no matter what boat I am on. Perhaps this is my USP as a skipper, I hope not as it would be very sad if it was.

Well spoken lozzer! As an owner of a squad 58 I've had a full time skipper over peak seasons and he does a great job of checking everything on the boat is ok, keep his ear out for better moorings, maintenance etc

as as owner employing a skipper is a commercial decision.

Of course .... Having a skipper does help when you are returning up the north coast of Mallorca after getting in at 6am after the jack d has had it's way :)

Where is the p85 berthed now? Fantastic boat, very keen on it
 
We get a great deal at the top of the Hamble, berth includes electricity, so we keep to tube heaters on all the while and a dehumidifier in winter. Mind you the electric goes through the roof when Powerskipper is on board as the tea consumption is horrific!!

We are in Sotogrande sitting in the miserable rain. forecast bad for the next week. Will be running the heating for sure. Cant wait for next years trip, we will certainly be heading your way en route somewhere. Perhaps we might hang around Palma for a bit and use it as a base. We did around 6000 miles could knock 30% off by using Palma as main base in summer.

JM Last year we wintered in Swanick so we had all the under floor heating on in cabins and a heater in the engine room, heaven knows what my bill would have been.

Just paid my recent bill 1000 euros for 2 months and I was being careful on consumption.....

but I have met more than one student who can match me or even beat me on tea consumtion , and don't mention the examiners they almost need an earn availble.

now I put it down to lots of talking and the salt air!!!!
