How much does stem and wood planking replacement cost?

Rather than just jumping on it. Why not discuss; ask what it is based on.

I did actually draft as post asking just that; but then thought better of it as nobody capable of producing such a ridiculous comment can possibly come up with proper substantiated facts.

How can you draw any conclusions about 'wooden boat sales' based on 'one particular builder'?

How were the 'asking prices' set and by whom?

How does he know the achieved prices?

Is he a broker? Does he have access to soldboats.com?

Even if he is a broker, how does he know the achieved prices from private sales?

.....and that is just for starters.

Not just based on the one builder, but also based on the amount of time on the market and the reductions I see being made before sale is acheived. Also, having been a wooden boat owner for nearly 15 years, a very hands on owner, I know what I would be prepared to pay.

Asking prices invariably set between broker and seller.

I'm not a broker. I know the prices because this particular builder has an active owners club, which I am right in the middle of, new owners come along, we make friends we talk about what we pay and what further work is required.

One particular model, generally advertised between £50k and £90k, one sold at £32k and one at £30k, a resto project asking £20k sold for less than £3k.

Facts.

OK, this should be easy, based on your facts:

What would be your asking price should you wish to sell your boat?

What would you be prepared to pay for her if somebody else was selling her?

My "wood" boat is up for sale at what I believe a fair price considering what she represents and I have been offered within 20% of the asking price. With that kind of a reduction I would rather keep her at this time! things may change in the future but not now.

To state 50% off just because boats are wood is ridicules! quality, type and condition will determine the asking price. As stated if this concept was adopted many wood boat would just double in price.

There are enough people with preconceived ideas of what a wood boat is without statements like the one above on an open forum. Just recently I have been offered almost 25% of the asking price without even seeing the boat and also informed she will be full of rot by his surveyor, again without seeing the vessel. Now personally I don't care what perception people have of "wooden"vessels but perception is all it is....... Good wood boats are worth the same as anything from the bottom of a scientist jar, rotten ones are only worth the cost of firewood.

Tender.....Aft
There was a thread I started a few weeks ago to discuss wood boats! I asked who had owned one many on here hade and many were very happy to have done so.

Thankfully, it appears that the majority of wooden boat owners hold their possessions in high esteem and seem little bothered by the vagaries of fashion and boys toys.

If I were selling my all Burmese Teak, Hong Kong built wooden boat I would have no problem justifying the asking price; I certainly would not have the mental image of lopping 50% off it! If a potential buyer is not interested in what I (and a surveyor) have to say, that is their loss.

Different matter if we are discussing a fresh water soaked, gently rotting, nail sick, heap of post war spongy larch lying in the corner of a boatyard. But that is the point; wooden boats should not be tarred with the same brush.

Doh! I completely missed it, being in PBO forum, which I don't check anymore.
Interesting thread anyway. Btw, your initial poll is now closed, but fwiw I'd have been #101... :)
