How much does it cost to get on the plane

A Raggie rant thread over on scuttleburks got me thinking, they appear to expect us to drop off the plane and power back up each time we pass them in a channel/harbour entrance.

How much fuel does it cost to drop off the plane and power back up , say a typical 36ft sports boat and a typical 42 flybridge ?

Just a stab in the dark but I reckon its the cost of a pint for the sports boat and a G&T for the flybridge.

I reckon by the time I have left Chichester I could easily have wasted a good 'p 1ss up' on complete strangers and not had a single thank you.

Depends what you mean by channel/harbour entrance; anywhere south of Trinity landing in Cowes, I'd think any mobo planing or even doing max displacement was a massive arse. Doing the same south of QE2 terminal in Southampton I probably wouldn't even notice them(not least because of the Red Jets whizzing past dragging a tsunami every 15 mins).

I think you have overlooked the point searush, fuel is a relatively minor cost over a years boating.
Rob basically answered the query very early on more or less as I will summarise here.


Cost is cost and just because you can afford to buy everyone in the pub a drink including strangers doesnt mean that it is sensible to do so.

Maintain course and speed and stop going up/down as it is both unwarranted and unwelcomed .

I think in the past I have tried to be too considerate.

Just for clarity I am not talking about breaking harbour speed limits, it is the approaches from the fairway markers that can be busy where I have been attempting to navigate without sending wash anyones way.

16knots but I would never do that speed.
I cruise in harbours @ 7 knots (no wash)

I then need to clear the hump and cruise at a minimum of 20 knots but prefer 25 knots.

Well, for my boat with twin KAD300s, I reckon it's under half a litre of the red stuff to accelerate to 25 knots.

Calc is as follows. Fuel burn at WOT is ~110l/hr - engines cannot burn any more than that. (Assumption) Boat accelerates 0-25 in less than 15 seconds, (570hp in 6 tons, s/s duo-props) but lets stick with that. That equates to just under half a litre of juice as the engines can't burn any more than that. (110litres/60mins/4 - quarter of a minute).

In reality it'll be less as the engines are speeding up from idle and not at maximum rpm.

Somebody tell me I'm wrong.....?

Edit. Of course this blows Daka's appeal for free drinks from the yachties, so perhaps I've slipped a decimal point.....

But just multiply that small,single volume by a year of doing it everytime a sail appears on the horizon
