How much does fuel does a 11kW genset burn?

1) do you usually let your gensets run completely unloaded for a couple of minutes, before turning them down?
That's a suggestion which I found in the manual of my previous Onan, but I don't see it in the Kohler manual.
Though it might well be there, and I just didn't find it yet...

personally I take care that I don't switch the genny off immediately after it has been working hard (A/C or watermaker or scuba compressor) but my crew doesn't give it any attention.
now I have to say that very often, the genny is running longer than needed, so switched off while it is only drop charging the battery's, ... (very low load)

2) are also your gensets amazingly fast to start up?
My previous (much smaller, at 6.5kW) genset always worked perfectly, but it took three seconds or so to start.
Now, this Kohler thing seems to be running on the split second when I push the button!

yes they start up very fast, BUT they mostly need 2 start attemps, because 2 secs after the first attempt there comes a safety "stop" command,
we have investigated and found out this is because the oil pressure comes up too slow,
but we have not yet found how to solve that.
cause could be: weak oil pump OR leak in the oil pressure regulating valve OR ...?)


you know that we have a system to automatically start the genny when battery SOC has reached 60%. (this systems gives maximum 3 start attempts).
When we are on anker, in the morning between 6 and 8am the genny starts automatically (when the auto start switch is ON, which I alway's set before I go to bed)

Interesting.
My Kohler, on top of starting immediately, never ever required a second attempt.
It even caught me surprised me after the last long winterization (7+ months): I was thinking to make a couple of short attempts or three before firing it up, in order to get some oil around, but before I knew it was up and running right away upon the first (VERY short!) press of the button... And even more surprisingly, even if stone cold, its smoke was negligible.
As I said, my experience with Onan couldn't have been better, but upon cold start it did throw a smoke puff for a few seconds.
Nothing like that with the Kohler, even if almost twice the power.
Just for the records, my previous Onan was (IIRC) Kubota powered, as opposed to the Yanmar in the Kohler.
