How much do you spend

A few years ago we met a couple who reckoned they lived on £100 per week. It seemed to me to be a dreadful existence, absolutely no luxuries, very basic food, anchoring in horrendous conditions at times in a small boat.

That all depends on what that £100 has to cover. We reckon on £550 a month for housekeeping, including sight-seeing, but not including any fuel.

I think in their case that was everything, although a far smaller boat than yours. But your housekeeping would put Mrs Beeton to shame! I suspect very few live so well, but so cheaply, as you.

We started a 6 month on/6 month off trip from the UK to Greece in 2007. Now in Greece we (still) have a monthly budget of €1500. Interestingly this monthly figure hasn't really altered since 2007. I guess our cruising and living habits change to accomodate that budget, but we do not live frugally. The figure is purely for living the monthly dream and does not cover flights, additional unforseen maintenance or winter storeage. Surprisingly even last year when visiting Croatia the monthly figure remained the same but of course we chose not to take the yacht into expensive places and ate out less. We have friends who spend considerably more and some others manage on considerably less. It's a case of cutting your cloth accordingly to the lifestyle you wish to maintain.

at the current conversion rate that would be about 2,500usd - but in ours we add in our flights back to visit family, all of our maintenance and of course our winter storage -- so all in all about what we are spending i would guess

We've been floating about for ten years now (UK, Med and now the Caribbean) and other than a slight inflationary increase have found much the same thing, irrespective of where we've been. I think what happens (almost without conscious thought) is that when the mooring costs are or you've had a few bits break, you just don't eat out ashore as often, go visit that 'sight' which has the exorbitant entry ticket price (We're in Deshaie, Guadeloupe today - have you seen how much they want to go into the botanical gardens here?) That said, when you've got to wherever, there are certain things that you 'have' to do, irrespective of price and then trust the budget to absorb it.

We're just starting out, and have spent a fortune (to us) since we set off from Scotland (the Clyde) in August. Most of the costs have been unexpected maintenance and repairs, which have surprised us given that we had a good survey when we bought the cat and did a lot of prep work before setting off. Saying that, we hope that we've gotten to the end of the big stuff and what's left now will be ongoing maintenance - if it is, then we should be able to live within our monthly income (approx £900) and only have to dip into savings for winter berthing/breakages/etc. I'm keeping a spreadsheet of expenditure, but whilst we've been shorebased, I've not been rigid about it as lots of expenses are (hopefully) one-offs.

Whichever way I look at it Vic. One year may be a new generator another a new dingy or sail repairs or something. There is always SOMETHING right? The cost seems to come out at £40 a day all in for my 12.9m boat sailing around 2000nm a year. That is flights repairs winter storage, fuel, food, flights for the kids when they come out the lot BUT excluding what I spend in the UK. I did this by adding all the costs incurred from being onboard in Sicily from Feb 2012 through to October at Preveza 2012 and dividing the cost by the days onboard. So when people think sitting at anchor in a bay is free it is still costing the best part of £25 a day just for the boat (insurance, winter storage, lifting, anti foul, engine service etc) before you eat something. This is assuming you anchor everyday for 26 weeks. This is before you even account for depreciation of the floating money pit.
