Im curious, i know this topic has been mentioned a few times. But i thought id ask again!

On average, per year, what do you spend on your boat?

Just on maintenance, dont want to know about mooring fees or fuel, just pure maintenace.

And just an average, i cant really do an average at the moment as ive had to buy lots of new toys for my cruise, obviousley, once the toys are bought it should just be a mainteanace schedule.

Id like to know per year what should be put by for the boat.

Please include the size and type of your boat!!

I put £100 a month in the kitty which covers maintenance and replacement of kit as it breaks. Sails probably come extra on top of that. My boat is an old 30ft GRP boat. Useing a seperate account for the boat tends to result in a nice little reserve for that nasty surprise.

1973 Westerly Pentland 32' centre cockpit ketch;

Very little on mtce, antifoul every other year, oil & filters, odd bits get replaced. Don't crane out, so in commision all year. Repair sails & most run of the mill stuff myself to keep costs down. Deck paint replaced a couple of panels a year so again no big costs.

Major items, you can usually see coming & plan for - but not always. Upgrading cabin lights to LED at present, need to repair masthead lights this year - could be 50squid if I have to buy new. Also planning to get cockpit cushions sometime this year or next.

Probably a couple of hundred a year max, plus mooring fees are 800 & ins is 250, fuel about 50-75 quid, food & booze are major items as we eat more & better & drink more. Another major extra is the 3-400 quid's worth of diesel for the car for driving to/from the boat. Also spent a couple of hundred buying secondhand stuff off the YBW forum, most of which has been just "nice to have" rather than essential.

1979 Moody 33 mk2. I reckon to spend about £300 - £400, mostly on various upgrades. This year it's a Barton Boomstrut, new mainsheet blocks and other bits and bobs. I put £50 a month into a boat kitty but it's not enough..........
Extras are Mooring, mooring inspection & Insurance at £300; boatyard winter hardstanding(ouch!) diesel etc etc.

Like Searush, I try to do everything myself to keep costs down and, like Searush I would say no more than a couple of hundred a year... BUT checking my accounts it has varied between £350 (last 12 months) and £1600.
A new battery (£100), bit of treadmaster + glue (£100+), sprayhood recover (£500+), sidelining/headlining + glue + ply (£150+), replacement autohelm (£300), new forehatch (£250+) etc etc etc.
It's amazing how much it can all add up and I haven't yet had to replace any sails. I guess keeping a MAB going isn't terribly cheap.

How can you possibly say!

Where do you draw the line between regular maintenance and upgrading?

There is a list of bare minimum costs such as mooring and insurance, but a well found boat could go for a whole season with just about zero additional expenditure - until something breaks or you want to undertake a major voyage.

In my experience annual expenditure above the basics is more a function of disposable income and boredom rather than requirements of the boat!

If i'm honest, a little here and a little there. I don't keep count.

That said, probably too much since i've bought electronics fairly recently and soon to be buying a nice new toilet.. oh and there is a boat jumble 2 minutes down the road next month so no doubt i'll have:

100 fenders big enough for the QM2
Enough new rope to make a skipping rope between earth and Jupiter.
Additional fishing gear to go with the last fishing gear I bought but never used cause I haven't tried boat fishing yet.
100 assorted objects which work alot better in my head than they do on a boat.

I'm probably not the best person to ask. :D

1979 Centaur bought for a good price 18 months ago.

Mooring, dingy storage and insurance is £1100 a year.

Up grading could incude the £100 I have spent on the headlining of the head/hanging locker, but that's really just keeping deterioration at bay.

The £1700 on the heater and fitting is an upgrade, but it's for me not to make the boat more saleable and it's a one off.

The sails are good so nothing to spend there for a bit.

The Volvo MD11C engine will need replacing eventually, but not just yet.

Boating is as cheap as chips, well almost.

Edit, Oh yes, I forgot the new fenders, odd bits of rope, shackles, twidly bits, shiny things, more rope, new life jackets, new wet weather gear, more rope, fid to splice new rope, new sacraficial strip, **** I'm gona stop.

That's classed as 'miscellaneous'. Those items don't count.. Well that's what I keep telling myself. :D

Maintenance

Just from memory over 30 years with 21ft trailer sailer. At todays prices.
3 sets of sails about 1600 squid per set. (3 hank on jibs)
2 sheet winches 100 squid
New windows 50 squid. (needs to be replaced again)
Ropes 200 squid.
Antifouling paint 100 squid 10 times.
Other paint 100 squid
Epoxy Resin for repairs 100 squid
Trailer rebuild 1000 squid.

So 5000 squid on initial purchase of 3500 squid 30 years ago. or 130 squid a year. Not much but then launch and recovery is free and I am a compulsive DIY.

Add to this 200 squid for mooring registration 200 squid for insurance 250 squid for club membership 30 squid for trailer registration 100 squid for boat registration and extra cost of having a big car to pull it.
totaling 780 squid per year running cost.
Or something like the cost of running a cheap small car.

For that I get about 100 hours per year of sailing or 500 miles. Or about 9 squid an hour.
NB I am working on $A2 per squid (pound) Initially it was $A3 per pound now closer to $A1.8 per pound.
Is it worth it? Well I have no plans to stop or change anything. olewill

Don't do it!!!

The last boat owner I know that added up his yearly bills sold his boat and was later found on a gardening forum. It’s a very dangerous exercise.....

the cost of your hobby

Is it a good idea to try and put a value/cost on a hobby.Surely that,s what we are really working for or if retired have worked towards for years.Unless of course you happen to be independently wealthy and then it,s all too easy.I have a 26 ft Seawolf and if I started to worry about the complete annual cost and make up spread sheets etc I think I would be better off taking to the garden or bird watching. As I get that little bit older I have been reminded that there are no pockets in a shroud so I try not to take life too seriously.I just broke the tiller extension today when we were hit by a gust of wind and the extension got caught up in the back stay. That,s another few euro,s to go if I am unable to fix it.Regards to all.

So far, £400 survey,£620 transport to Gillingham, £240 to lift onto transport (ripoff MDL), £145 to lift off and chock, £650 insurance, £2700 mooring, then its work to bring up to scratch - foredeck repairs £1000, strip, prime in epoxy and antifoul £3000, fit new water filters £900 before I fit new fire extinguishers, Racor filters, fenders and warps ( last owner kept these!) oh new gps etc and then there's the empty liferaft cannister..... damn expensive this malarky. But worth it, please tell me its worth it....:)
