How much chain and cable do you carry?

As part of a mad keen weekend of activity I heaved Glad's anchor off the front and onto the gravel in order to inspect the chain... Several nasty moments later it came up short in the hawse pipe with a rusted glob in the way at about 20 m... So I have to get a new bower rode, and was wondering wot the rest of us East Coasters carry? Looking at J Green, 40 m of calibrated 8mm for the windlass is a lot, and a chenk of octoplait on the end is a lot as well...

Optimised expense is what I'm after I think...

Came with the boat. Should just about do for the East Coast!

Interestingly if you order before end April at J Green, it's cheaper to get chain spliced to octoplait than chain... So i've got 50m chain and 30m octoplait en route

280 feet of 10 mm plus 60 lb CQR, the old boat (33', 8 T) had half the chain and a 35 lb CQR, which never let me down.

I replaced my chain ( originally 27m of 8mm, now 40m) plus 15m of octoplait from EYE marine near Felixtowe. Their website is here:

The company is a commercial mooring supplier for big boats ( 2nd hand anchors from 250kg !) and the website is obviously a newish venture to attract us yotties. The prices beat Jimmy Green hand down, especially as you can collect if you wish. They were most helpful and supply ropes also and will do the splices at a reasonable cost.

Incidentally I like you bought Octoplait ( not from them but at a boat show) although it stows fine it is quite soft and tends to get caught in the windlass, ordinary 3 strand would handle better in the windlass but would be more difficult to stow.

30m of 10mm chain and 20m of octoplait. I bought the calibrated chain at Dauntless - cheap as chips and spliced on the anchorplait myself.

What gauge of octoplait do you use? 16mm, 18mm, 20mm?

I've got 30m of 8mm stainless chain connected to 30m of galvanised on a 16k delta. I don't like the idea of joining the SS with galv. so I'm going to split the two and splice warps to each so that I've got a good length for the kedge too (20k Danforth type), bought some 16mm warp a while back for the kedge, but I guess I'd need something meatier for the main hook?
