I am interetsed in a couple of motor boats - The first is a Sessa 35 (2004) with twin KAD43 and the other is a Bavaria 32 Hardtop (2007) with Twin D3's (160hp).

Both are advertised inviting offers and both have an asking price of around £85,000 with low engine hours.

My question is simply how low an offer can I submit without losing credibility with brokers for other boats I may be interested in and which of the two above is likely to depreciate least and be easiest to sell in the future.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

Have you balls of brass?

offer what you want to pay, if it's not enough the vendor will tell the broker, and don't settle for the brokers word for it, make sure he has spoken to the vendor, the brokers job is to get the best price he can for the vendor, your job is to get the boat for the lowest price possible, the broker is not working for you, he's working for himself!

When we made an offer last year for our late 2004 S28 via Essex boatyards, my initial offer was for £65K, when the boat was advertised for £76K. TBH, it felt like a cheek putting such a low offer in, but thought "What the hell".

After a bit of negotiating, we got her for £68K.

Don't worry if you put a low but reasonably fair offer in. It can either be accepted or rejected - at least the vendor has a offer to ponder, which is better than no offer at all!

Rule of thumb is 10% below asking price then after survey a reduction to cover any costs of defects etc.

If its a dealer owned boat they dont drop much but you can get extras fitted within the price if there is room in the deal.

Or like others say offer what you like, remember you can always bid up but never down after an offer.
