I'm doing a little research across Europe do quantify the number of SRC issued to date.
This as I'm giving my time, for free, to a non-profit organization i the perspective to modify the administrative red tape that greatly limit the use of DSC radios.
Just to mention, in the 2006-2014 years in France well over 140.000 SRCs (they call them CRR, but it is perfectly in accord with GMDSS rules) were issued; in Italy seemingli 142 (yes, one undred and fortytwo) SRC and 5 LRC.
And how You Brits are faring?

Many thanks in advance for any help: in ofcom I found only infos viable to obtain the SRC, not this kind of "marketing" stuff.

Worth contacting the RYA as they issue them on behalf on the UK MCA. Figures may well be in the same order of magnitude as the French figures you quote.

There is a similar problem in Ireland with an expensive path to a qualification, which means many yachtsmen just don't bother or get the UK qual. instead.

The VHF operator's certificate in the UK is organised by the RYA, the Royal Yachting Association. If you email them, they may be able to give you a definite answer.

What is it that limits the use of DSC radios in this case? Are you talking about the requirement to pass an exam, or something else?
That 142 for Italy, seems very low?
Very interesting, please let us know your findings..

Yes, the number is very low.
That depends on the fact that:
A) exams are held ONLY at the Ministry in Rome.
B) by law a commission of 8 to 10 examiners has to be organized (I'm ready to bet that in 90% of the cases only two or three members were ever together, thus giving room to a case in the Admnistrative Court because the formal requirements were not fullfilled and all SRCs would be cancelled......)
C) NO Official textbook exists.
D) the exam program says, here and there, "basic notions of" something (an examiner with morning hangover would easily "kill" any apprentice not knowing, e.g., what where and how to find the Polar Star),

During high season it's appalling to hear the silly and sometimes frantic radio calls to the Coast Guard for any Emergency on board and with problems in defining the position, the boat and the nature of the Emergency itself.

The lack of SRC implies a very limited use of AIS transponders, so when sailin around Wells, pumping ore docking stations off the coast You keep hearing on channel 16 the repetitive call from some lookout Officer: (Motorboat (or sail Yacht) traveling with course XYZ, aproximatly in posizion XX°yy'ZZ" North and ZZ°TT'QQ" East, You are entering a prohibited area...."; and the poor guy would pass the best part of the day sending warnings and, in 90%of case, not receiving answers.
