How many times have you purchased same part for your boat?

Charts, I have to buy new ones every decade or so.
A set that came with my first boat showed the minefields off the Belgium coast but Europe seemed to be in the same position.
One of my current set shows the Orwell bridge under construction.

Same as others, I need a part and think "I will get a spare this time too - though funny I thought I had one but can't find it where I would keep these type of things - oh well" So come back with two more. Do the job, then seek out a cunning place to put the spare so I will not lose or forget where I put it. Find an ideal and obvious new place, only to find the one I put there last time. Must be age!

Had my boat about 10 years & have replaced the starter motor every 1-2 years. I have a spare on board. It's a Watermota Sea Panther & one of the first ones. Take one bullet proof Ford 1600 cross flow block & add a new diesel head + marinised bits like the heat exchanger. Oh, what do e do about the starter..... The compression ration just went up hugely & the starter won't turn it over. Solution - just run it from 24V. Problem solved. Except the starters only last a couple of yeas at most. When I bought the boat, they were £30 from the auto-factor. Now the rice is going up but I do have a friendly specialist that supplies me. Next stop is to buy a load of brushes from eBay & start fixing the, myself.

Not if the mines are still there. Not shown on my charts so i think i should complain & ask for money back except they would be worth more as antiques
& lets face it all the rocks are still there & no one ever could be sure of the depths & position of sandbanks
Add to that -virtual buoys off france & i reckon you are ok

Is this due to halyard wraps? The genoa halyard on a Sadler 34 is almost parallel to the forestay, so will wrap if it is not hauled tight before furling/unfurling the sail, and possibly even then. There is a new page on the problem at http://coxengineering.sharepoint.com/Pages/Halyardwraps.aspx

My own forestay, also Sadler 34, has been replaced once in almost 20 years, also due to a wrap but caused by seizure of the bottom swivel.

Yes! In my defence I wasn't on the boat the second time.

Viv, are your insurers ok with a 20yo forestay?

I'm now on my third forestay! I've owned my Sadler 34 for 14 years, and over that time destroyed three forestays. this time it really hurts, in middle of summer cruise so needs to be done quickly - that's £300 thank you very much.

Got me thinking about other often replaced parts -I'm on my fourth Jabsco water pump (that circulates the hot water through the Calorifier) Each one £100+

Finally, and my worst buy ever on the boat, got two new Gebo hatches. Within three years both crazed badly, and now contemplating replacement. The original Canpa hatches must have lasted nearly 20 years.

Am I alone or do others have similar experiences?

John

I am a serial buyer of alternator regulators. And anchors.

Thats too often to replace forestays. Something wrong. Most likely inadequate articulation but you gave no details.

Vyv Cox has alluded to the problem with forestay angle above, and it's one I'm aware of and try to prevent . I'm an all weather, quite high annual mileage sailor, so to some degree accept it as wear and tear.

Fresh water pumps. Doesn't seem to matter which brand, the pressure switches fail.
I started to buy them two at a time.
Now have a separate heavy duty adjustable pressure switch that controls a 70amp relay. Bet that doesn't burn out on the 7 amp pumps.

Had my boat about 10 years & have replaced the starter motor every 1-2 years.

I bought five reconditioned starters for my VW camper and got about 6 months out of each before the penny dropped - I was getting the same one, rebuilt, each time. It had a very slight flaw in the frame which meant that unless it was clean and polished, it jammed when hot, so as soon as the recon wore off a bit, problems arose again. A brand new starter cost a bit, but solved the problem.

Am I the only one who keeps replacing the little sockit for the Autohelm ST4000 :grumpy:
The plastic keeps cracking around the little screws, think I'm on my 4th one now.
