I have had 1 of mine 25 years at least.
At the begining of the season I clamp them to a waterbut, clean the plug, put the choke on ½, fill the carberettor with carb-cleaner & pull. There is usually a spectacular "pop" then they run as sweet as a nut until October.
The only thing I do to lay-up is drain the tank, as the fuel mix is so rich.

Wow, thats a pretty intensive maintenance schedule you have there!
Drain the tank eh? Mines has the same fuel in it for the last 2 seasons at least. At 6 quid a gallon plus oil, I cant afford to throw it around.

Mine started first pull a couple of months ago on some rather smelly fuel which had been in there for twenty years of layup.
 
I've got an old SeaHORSE (Johnson) does it count? It's a twin cyl 4hp 2 stroke. Once it's had its first start of the season it's super-reliable.

I lent it to a friend who thought he could make it go better by dismantling the carburettor whilst sitting on the swim-deck with the motor in place on the tender ... anyone know where to get 1970s Johnson carburettor bits?

The Honda 4 stroke 2hp I bought to replace it is rather naff!

You dont say what year but most parts are still available.

Id try Oakley Marine in Brighton (Aka Outboards Direct) for new parts or Bill Higham Marine for second hand
 
A friend gave me a Seagull when he moved to Thailand. It had been on a 1960 Pearson Electra that he bought in the early 1990s. He replaced it with a 1964 Evinrude that I had given him. When the Evinrude gave out, he bought a used Mercury. The Seagull had been sitting in his garage for many years before he left the country. There is no room for it in my shed, so it's in the crawl space under my house. It hasn't been run in well over ten years.

But I wont get rid of it, and have promised myself to take it out for a good run on the tender in July.

Yes mine is a June 1967 forty featherweight which I persuaded my dad to buy new-still going strong on my dingy and starts second pull every time.
Just broke my first prop drive spring in in 45 years-wrapped around a pick up buoy.
