How many knots?

Clifford Ashley's Book of Knots describes over 3,800 so you have some way to go yet.
Anybody know how much an Ashley's is now? Mine cost about £25 and that was 30 years ago!

Nary my friend ...

The standard rabbit-laid bowline jams so replace it with a side-laid bowline....

And then there's the top'sl hitch - another magnificent knot ....

and then there's the double twist top'sl hitch which turns into an undoable under load stopper knot for spectra/dyneema lines.

And then there's the trucker's hitch ... which needs an unjammable rolling hitch on the bite to make it work ....

That's 3 knots and if you want to make it 4 we'll add the knot that allows you to add a thin line to a thick line with a single tuck (although it's one of the above)

A reef knot doesn't count as it's a Mickey Mouse knot with the ends pulled trough.

Ken, you've muddled through with the wooden spoon handle as a spike.

Dear oh dear!

We started off with a perfectly good 'why I'm useless at boating thread' with admirable backup from the stinkie contingent, who really do know what they're talking about on this occassion, and yet it's still been turned into a PC 'you can learn something from this' thread

PS tcm, the round turn and two half hearted is no where near as good as Learners recent round turn and two half arsed <sic>

Now, I can understand keeping several foot thick books on board as emergency kedges or for propping up the boom, but how many of those 3,800 knots can you tie?

Quite a lot! It used to be part of my job.

Don't you recognise a leg pull when you see one? I think Ken would have done

Re: How many knots? re:Neraida

When I have friends on board for a once in a lifetime sail (not to sure whether it is for me or them) I am just thankful that the fenders stay attached ! you can always adjust lines afterwards before they have any real load. Thats theory in any rate .....
