Many many years ago HM Customs appeared at my office and demanded to speak to a visiting member of staff and tested his Mercedes! He said it was not the first time he had been dipped!
thats what i thougth, ive had 4 in the last 20 years and never had a sniff of gettin g pulled, a scrap yard mate of mine has always said that a cheap diesel car and if they pull you so what, confiscate it??
Many years ago I had a Ford transit to which we fitted a V6 engine. In order to get it in we fitted a diesel transit front panel. I came out one day to see a sticker on the windscreen informing me my tank had been dipped by the C&E. I still wonder what the petrol did to their machine as it sucked a sample from the tank.
Had an ex customer make a malicious call to C&E stateing that I was using red from the trailboat and putting into the car.
They questioned me (under caution) then went out to take samples from the car and boat. Came back 5 mins later with very sheepish looks on their faces - both my boat and car were petrol. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
Re: How many forumers have had their diesel cars checked for red diese
It's their typical "shooting fish in a barrel" approach.
The risk of being stopped in the street are virtually nil.
Other example:
Club organised race/cruise to Ostend - upon their return a lot of boats are boarded and checked for "illegal" duty free.
How many have ever been checked "at random"?

That is a random check - they randomly chose your club race. They never choose ours.
I've seen vehicles checked at the local cattle market but no others. Like to see them check mine anyway - its gas. Boom! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
Never been checked myself although I regularly buy cans of red from petrol stations and drive a diesel. I have driven through 2 check points on the road, where vans seemed to be the main target, and a friend of mine was checked at one.
Twice in the last two years: both times in a roadside checkpoint where all trucks, 4x4s and about every tenth car were diverted to a 'viewpoint' parking area. All very efficient: and courteous, since my car was clean!
Not worth the risk, at least in this area.
Re: How many forumers have had their diesel cars checked for red diese
A few years ago when I was still practising as an accountant I had C & E officers turn up at my offices with a warrant to take away the records of a building company client. They had been stopped and had red in their van (from supplies bought for their diggers). This rapidly escalated into a VAT enquiry and a tax investigation. A long and expensive process - yes they had one or two grey areas and several black holes!
Yes, I've had a car 'dipped', at my home adress and the C&E man explained that they make random selections of diesel vehicles from DVLA information. I was the fifth one that day (for him) but he wouldn't say how much success he was having. Certainly none with me. /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif
Rather than using a dye to distinguish cheapo diesel, why not add a squirt of perfume. Then they could just stop any one whose banger smelt of Chanel No 5.

Lateral thinking.

I believe that happened in Wales. Some individuals converted chip shop waste oil to diesel. and were spotted when the smell of fish and chips from the exhaust gave them away.
