So, you've polished your boat and it's looking dandy. Now for the wax. Assuming you're using a good wax, say 3m marine ultra wax paste for example, is one application of wax enough or would you add another? Does more than one application give you more protection against UV for example? logic says says yes but does it?
My blue hull really suffered last year from fender scuffs as well as the usual UV damage. The hull has been cut and polished and looks much better. Now I need to wax it - hence my question.

We put a couple of coats on this year purely because we had the time to do so. In previous years we have usually only applied one and the hull has still had a nice shine by the end of the year. That said ours is white so a bit more forgiving.

The logic being that when you put one coat on you do actually put surplus, and then have to polish it off to give the shine. Not alot of point in then putting even more suplus on, just to wipe it off

I would have thought that when one coat is applied then buffed to a shine you have one wax layer; if you apply a second coat you'd have two layers of wax or double the protection wouldn't you?

No, your second coat is more likely to break down the first.

Think of it like filling up an ice cube mould to pop in the freezer. Once the right water level is reached, why add more water. As gigm states you are just adding to the surplus.

Maybe it depends on which wax is being used.

For example, I use AutoGlym super resin polish, followed by the Extra Gloss protection on top.
I understand the Extra Gloss protection can be addded in layers; I'm planning to put 2 coats on this year.

Happy to be corrected by the experts though, I don't want to be wasting my time
