Being creative helps.... 1 week maintenance trip early spring (sans family), 1 week boys trip May, 2 weeks family July, another 3 weeks family late Aug/Sep, of course another end of season 1 week boys trip, then of course the end of season wrap up Oct. Occasional trip in winter, but that's just to get away from the British winter.

Boat in Puerto Portals, apartment nearby (swmbo thinks it's a better investment than the boat, but that's money, boat investment is pleasure), door to boat approx 5 hours(no luggage) really the costs are ridiculous but worth every penny:encouragement:

After all they can take your money & posessions, but not your memories & experiences.....

Thanks for replies , interesting comments re travel times

It,s looking as though most people that travel any distance to there boat, put in a fair amount of effort and organisation ,

Swmbo and myself are still in full time work, although we do have Monday s off when visiting the boat, we made 33 trips to

the boat last year, this include,s the odd week, a month in summer and the rest Friday eve to Monday eve,

It,s looking the further away your boat is the less time you get to spend on it, ( abroad ) but the time you do get is

quality time , with good weather conditions so are maximising your enjoyment ,

Looking as less is more :)

Firstly, I live in Scotland (West Coast) so if you think you have bad weather try here! That said I live 15 mins from marine so even with the weather issues I can fit a couple of hours to a few days on the boat as soon as we get a slight window. I've seen me write off a Saturday from the forecast and see it change at 11am and I'm out on the water by 11.30am, so it seems to me if you are 2 hours plus commute (you say 4!) then the UK is not ideal but if you can be minutes from the marina then the UK weather is doable. I had 12 months boating last year on my old boat that needed calm dry weather and I found the days to enjoy it.

Thanks for the replies.

I hit the big six-o this year and in the next year or so plan to reduce my working week to four days, and perhaps down to three in the final run up to retirement. That would be the ideal time to consider a move to the Med when we'd be able to spend more time on the boat and enjoy the more consistent summer weather. The only downside really is that I hadn't considered this when I bought my current boat which isn't really suited to warmer climates. Not sure I fancy the pain of changing boats when a change of location might only be for a year or three.

Something to think on :)

Congrats on the big birthday. Med-speccing the boat isn't that big a deal - generator, aircon and (ideally) passerelle is all you need.

Cheers :)

Had to replace the generator in January. Did a like-for-like swop so it's a FP 4000S rated at 4.5kva. No idea whether that would be enough to power aircon.

Even if the generator was sufficient I've no idea how or where you'd put aircon. Certainly no space in the engine room I can think of and I don't know of any Broom 42cl's with it fitted. Bet you don't get any Brooms down in the Med do you :)

Thinking of moving the boat has only come about recently after chatting about the succession plan here at work and getting my pension plans sorted to take advantage of the new flexibility. I must admit, looking at the weather from my office window, the Med seems a very attractive proposition :)

Funnily enough there was a Broom on my quai in Port Vauban last year.

I have a 4kw Onan generator which is enough to power the single 16000btu unit that I have on my Targa 40. It would also power an additional 9000btu unit if I needed it, but they would need soft-starts to make sure the combined starting loads don't trip the generator out. Fwiw my aircon is a combined unit and is located under the companionway steps.

Best advice would be to talk to an installer directly and see what they suggest. I used Seacraft Marine who are based in Poole.

Excellent info Jimmy, many thanks. I had convinced myself the generator wouldn't be man enough for the job so just shows you how wrong you can be. Definitely worth further enquiry.

Congratulations. Let me know what it's like in case I decide to be forty twenty instead :)
