Unfortunately getting up to yachtmaster standard is shockingly easy. I'm sure that I'm not alone in being staggered by the low standard of some yachtmasters (be they power or sail).

I have sailed with zero to hero's who I have found to be excellent and I've also sailed with salty old yachtmasters who've been at sea for years and I've been appalled at their incompetency.

I'm sure that as an instructor you can pick up the mechanics of sailing in a couple of weekends if you've half an ounce of nous.

You've done all the hard work with your sea sense, navigation etc. the sailing bit you'll get in your 1250 miles qualification requirements.

Re: A couple of days?

You are right of course.

I think the key was in the words, "You look like sensible people!" The story is worth telling because it shows that sensible powerboaters can become sensible sailors very quickly. Having some boat sense is the first step.

Wow, what a response, may I thank you all for the advice given.
I have sailed a dingy at various time over a ……years [being female AS Jimi pointed out [and yes I remember you from Poole /forums/images/icons/wink.gif ] I will refrain from telling that figure] I have mainly sailed toppers, on lakes and a little on the sea normally showing kids how to sail or bringing boat back in when to strong for them, So am used to getting wet[ and not from dishes Jimi] And have been out on a friend yacht a few times.

OH and this week on the water I need to show some pupils what the effect of LARGE wash has on a sail boat,[ where’s that Glen Rosa again] and off course being a female We are “nae use at driving or boat handling and their wind awareness (except under the covers) is non existent” So glen Rosa will under stand if I have to repeatedly repeat this exercise!!!!

See you all on the water, Julie /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

you used to have to have the full 2500 miles under sail to transfere YM power to sail, they have changed it now i believe to 1250miles under sail. you'll still need the qualifieing 60 milers tho.

What a good thread

I've not yet read all the posts so sorry if i'm repeating something already said.

"How long to learn to sail?"

I switched from power to sail although I might add only to a lowly motor/sailer with a bloxdy big engine.

From reading books and just getting out there and having a go depends on the person as to how long to learn.

For very basic proficiency about a week then a life time getting better, I've been at it close on 50 years and I'm still learning, I don't profes to know it all I'm far from it. I make mistakes and it's quite normal to make the biggest cock up when being watched by half the marina or yacht club /forums/images/icons/smile.gif been there got the tee shirt.

So to sum up, To switch not long at all, from scratch will take a little longer, like the rest of your life.....

Hey - even for a sailing YM there is no requirement for the miles to be under sail - provided they are done on a sailing boat /forums/images/icons/smile.gif. Isn't it estimated that the average leisure sailor spends almost as much time under engine as under sail?

I have completed one passage that could be counted as a YM qualifying passage where 90% was done under engine.

Still - the 50% rule does make sense - I wonder what the requirement is the other way round

Jimi, you can give her the frying pan, but making these types of comments will probably cause the frying pan to be used in unexpected ways ie
