how long is my boat??

I'm just saying that if you genuinely feel that the marina boys have made a mistake in the measurement, you could just point it out to them and ask them to re-measure. The whole business of documentation is irrelevant. The length is what it is and can easily be established using nothing more than a tape measure which will prove who is right.
The bit about temp and tension corrections is irrelevant and just tongue in cheek for the benefit of any surveyors looking in. Metal tapes do expand with temperature but they are probably using a fibre one.
On the basis that marinas/harbours charge by the meter the difference between 32' (under 10m) and 33' being over 10m I would imagine that's a molehill that most of us would bump into and do our utmost to flatten! As richitch has pointed out the marina isn't going to round down.

As someone who works in a marina I just love customers like you. Our business is to rent you a space to moor your boat, that is your boat in its entirety including any pulpits, davits and swim platforms and anything else fixed to the boat which sticks out front or back. It doesn't matter what it says on your part one document, your bill of sale, your small ships document, your BSS, the original build papers or even on the side of your boat, we are interested in what the tape measure says. I always offer my customers to hold the end of the tape measure to ensure they are happy with the measurement and 99% of them are usually accurate with how long it is. Funny, you always know which customer is going to quibble when he comes in and says "I have a Turbo 36 which is 36' long for a berth, that's 36' did you get that, 36'..." Yes mate, I got that and I've got your number! I maybe female and I maybe blonde, but I wasn't born yesterday. If paying to keep your prized boat is too much for your wallet it's time to look for a new hobby!!

Wow - I've read the above a couple of times and the more I read it I'm thinking how arrogant and rude you come across, do you actually talk to customers (ie people you rely on for wages) like that ?

No, because I don't need to.
People in general are not stupid and know how long their boat is.
You get the odd chancer who tries it on but in the main not. And as I said they are given the option of measuring it, some are even surprised when it's smaller than they thought.
We have a good crowd on our marina, made all the better by the fact everyone is treated the same and no-ones getting a 'better deal' than anyone else :)

Good old fashioned tape measure. It's a plastic coated nylon one. I hold one end customer holds the other, one at each extremity, and we see what it reads. If the customers not there another colleague helps, it really isn't a big deal! I think the OP issue is that they've measured it while he wasn't there and made it different to him. I've met the guys from Sovereign Harbour at Eastbourne and they're a reasonable bunch, just ask for a re-measure with him there.

When I worked in a marina which measured boats I always hoped that the owner was on board. I would give them the end of the tape with the measurement on and let them tell me how long their boat was. Always satisfied both sides.

youre missing the point. my boat is bang on 32ft. measured end to end, no bowsprints etc, they have measured it and made it over 33ft which is wrong.
they will measure it again with me there, but i thought it would have the measurement of 32ft on the part one. speaking to other guys in the marina who have seen them doing it, they are measuring them from the pontoons, which are not as long as the boat,[about 6ft shorter] so you can see why they are getting
so many wrong!
im not complaning about paying for the full length but im buggered if im paying an extra £120 for a foot that doesent exist.

Does nobody read what is actually written in these posts?

If it was my boat I would measure my boat very accurately using people that know what they are doing[obviously no women involved ] simple.
Obviously best done out of the water if possible.

The marina and measured my boat. It came to 20.01m.

They still charge me (and have done for years), for the 15-16m category.
I am 15.63m LOD and on the registration document.
