How long can you run a diesel engine without a load

Forgive the petrol engine intrusion ....

FoMoCo ..... Special Vehicles Devision ... who produced the 2.8i Capri.

Two basic faults .... first was the rear #6 cylinder never rec'd full injection charge and always ran very lean ... a trick of competition guys was to install a 7th injector ..... That lean burn used to burn out that back cylinder over time. Second was the lack of sufficient oil drip feeds in the gearbox ... FoMoCo refused to adapt the box and went from Hi Viscosity Gear Oil to Egine Oil to Hydraulic Oil ... of course Ford badged bottles ... which if you used any other brand - invalidated any warranty on the box.
 
I recently got a new northern lights genny with a nice lump of 3 cylinder lugger engine in it.

They say to try to keep 75% of load on it for the first 100 hours. Nothing about after that.

Cost me a lot so I did what they said, but it wasn't easy and I had to put stuff on that I didn't need to keep it up there at 75%.

Right, my 2 pennyworth. Also having worked for Ford at Dunton for 30 odd years testing engines, I was always taught
that turbo piston rings have a low wall loading, and this is what polishes the bore if they are run light. In plant Nat asp engines have an 8 min break in, turbos 12 mins.
 
I can completely understand the instruction to load the engine up during running-in. You need high cylinder pressures to "blow" the rings out hard against the cylinder walls until they wear themselves (and the bores) to each others' exact shape. That's well established engine building practice and I'd always adhere to it.

I think he might have missed out a hyphen between 'break' and 'in', old chap. As in '....has an 8 minute break-in period.....' /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I'm sure if you say it's shite then it must be shite, but having spent a lot of hard earned on a new genny I think I'd rather take their advice, on the reasonable assumption that they don't tell me to load the engine when running in just to waste some ink in the operators manual. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
 
I can assure you its genuine shite, common practice with F1 engines to not rev wthout load because the rings are not "blown out". I've watched live readings from cylinder pressure sensors, no load = low pressure, add load pressure goes up due to rings sealing properly. About the only thing to run in on a modern engine is the rings, that why they use oil when new and not after being properly run in.
 
Why ANY engine should never run without a load

If you don't need the engine power, why waste fuel?

I added an extra "a" should read 8 minute break in period. I.E. start up and run under normal load conditions - drive orf!!
