How long a mooring line on the anchor snubber

Dolphin, you're spot on, its the shafts of windlasses that succumb to shock and snatch loads for that very reason. They are not designed for mooring but to lift the anchor. They are seldom pulled off the deck though it does happen, more often the shaft gets bent. Anything that reduces shock loads is a good idea, surprisingly cleats seem to stay put but bow rollers often come adrift - and pedigree is no guarantee.

Whilst agreeing that chain without a snubber may cause damege to whatever it's fastened, I think you worry too much about the strength of deck cleats for anchoring. Mooring dwellers have to use their cleats regardless of conditions and it's a very rare occurence for a cleat to fail.

If you had ready my previous posts depending on system. I am not in favor of snubbers, although each to there own. Re Deck cleats the boat I have is light weight 35 foot just under 4 ton, we looked at her sister ship she had lost all her mooring cleats at some point. On ours she has only had the after ones replaces....

IMHO There are enough comments on here about failed deck hardware that given the opertunity its worth checking on any boat you own..
