Dolphin, you're spot on, its the shafts of windlasses that succumb to shock and snatch loads for that very reason. They are not designed for mooring but to lift the anchor. They are seldom pulled off the deck though it does happen, more often the shaft gets bent. Anything that reduces shock loads is a good idea, surprisingly cleats seem to stay put but bow rollers often come adrift - and pedigree is no guarantee.
