Sorry pretty sure this will sound very stupid question but don't have manual to hand. Is it just cooled by circulation of ambient air - i was thinking of a) internally and b) the exhaust bearing in mind it doesn't have the cooling water injection that a diesel engine has.

The heater casing is cooled by the air circulating in the system; the exhaust isn't cooled, which is why the pipe is usually lagged and protected.

The exhaust is deliberately not cooled, the idea is (generally) that the water produced by burning the diesel leaves as vapour, above 100degC.
If the exhaust gases are allowed to cool, you need to know where the water is going.

Which models? I have refeks which runs 24/7 when I'm onboard, it just heats the air and the air. Chimney has a guard round it, it helps a bit as well. I fitted a computer fan to help.
