Drifting slightly, the power supply adapter for my laptop gets very hot on the boat. No screws involved. Should it?

12v DC-DC adapter; or regular mains adapter via an inverter?
If the former, NO. It should be dissipating well under 5W. (mine right now is not even perceptibly above ambient).
If the latter then it probably does not like the rather crude waveform from a cheapish inverter

I should have been clearer, it's plugged into the shore power with a UK 13 amp plup via a Spanish adapter.
