How heavy is my sail?

Further to the thread on Novosails' cleaning service, I asked for a quote based on the area of my genoa, (59sq.m.). Novosail estimate the weight and charge at £10 per kg., (less a 20% discount for an October order). They estimate the weight to be 42kg, resulting in a quote of £420.

The sail is 630sq.ft (59sq.m), 10oz. Dacron. I'm presuming this means 10oz per sq.yd:

630sq.ft. @9sq.ft. per sq.yd. = 70sq.yds @10oz. per sq.yd. = 700oz. @ 28g per oz. = 19600g = approx. 20kg.

I presume that various bits will add a bit to the weight, but am I missing something, or is my calculation wrong?

I know I could weight it, but I dont have the facility here.

Many Thanks

Richard

I think 40ish is more realistic: I have a slightly smaller genoa, fabric may be a lower 9oz too, and it definitely weighs more than 20kg (which is the weight of a 20l water portable tank, so easy to compare just take them inside your arms), I'd say around 30-35 for mine ? And yours is bigger with heavier cloth..

I was told that the sailmakers take their washig to industrial laundries, the nearest one to us is in Shrewsbury.
Worth checking out the local (Glasson Dock) overall supplier to see if they would do it?

My genoa that is 37sq.meter (not sure about oz but definately 10oz is max though I believe is less) weights around 25kg. So, 20kg is too little for 59sq.m.

My total sail area is close to that of your genoa. The total weight of main plus genoa, which are both in relatively heavy material, are close to the limit that I would want to carry around. So I'm guessing that 40 kg isn't far off.

The genoa for our Bav 39 weighs 24kg. It's a std Elvestrom Cruising so 40kg doesn't sound unreasonable for yours.
Presumably Novo will weigh the sail when they recieve it and charge accordingly.

FWIW just my gut feeling only would tell me that 40kg would be more like it for a genoa of a 40ft boat. I tend to compare everything to 20kg weights which just happens to be a standard at work.
