How good is butyl tape

I sure hope it works ok - we have just fitted two Blake seacocks to a friends boat together with a Radice rubber stern gland so will be on board when launched. We used the same butyl tape I used to bed dg units to wooden windows in our extension. I did test it with a cleat on a piece of plywood and it certainly seemed to work ok.
Hmm. My understanding is that butyl tape and it’s very sticky friend in a tube arbormast is a non setting compound for bedding above water. I would use sikaflex or ct1 or pu40 for skin fittings as it’s adhesive as well as a sealant.

Should not be used underwater though. Sika Flex is a better choice under the waterline.

Also should not be used where fuel can get to it as it will dissolve.

As long as above the waterline it's fab. If below the water line tek7 is great. Unlike sika tek7 works in the wet, even claimed to work under water. I sealed a flat roof with it recently, whilst it was raining, and it worked a treat.

Butyl tape never goes off, so can also be reused to rebed removed fittings if needs be, as long as its above the waterline.
